What's A Woman In A Long-Term Relationship To Say About The ...

Source: JLN Photography/WENN, Getty, WENN

Foolishly I thought women in relationships had it easier than single women when it comes to marriage questions and pressure to cross the matrimonial threshold, but now I see they?re really just on opposite sides of the same coin.?As a single woman you can never provide a satisfactory answer when people ask why you?re not married and apparently the same goes for women in long-term relationships as well. What?s interesting though is that the same people who complain about being on the receiving end of that pressure and criticism, i.e. women, are the very ones doling it out to others.

Reactions to Gabrielle Union?s recent interview about baby and marriage fever with Just the Fab?garnered rather mixed responses on the site yesterday. Pleasantly, most people took Gabby?s hesitation to jump into marriage with Dwyane Wade due to past failed relationships at face value, supporting her choice to take things slow. Others, however, cried ?BS? and charged that were D. Wade to drop down on one knee today and attempt to put a ring on it, that hesitation would fly out the window and she would most certainly say ?yes.? Immediately I began wondering what?s the deal with women not being able to tell their truth about their own relationships?

What I find most funny about these reactions to Gabrielle?s feelings toward marriage is the juxtaposition of her approach to the media?s obsession with her relationship alongside singer Brandy?s. Plenty of people, myself included, have been critical of Brandy?s overzealous declarations that she is anxiously awaiting a proposal from her boyfriend, Ryan Press. Essentially, the reaction has been calm down before you?embarrass?yourself, but when a woman like Gabby basically says, ?Eh, we?re not in a rush. I?m enjoying where we are in our relationship right now? that?s problematic too and we assume she?s lying?

And let?s not forget Oprah Winfrey who has been in a relationship with Stedman since 1986 and endured this type of criticism for the longest. It wasn?t enough for Oprah to explain that she?s not the marrying kind ? because of course there is only?one type of woman in the world and she is definitely dying to be married ? no, the logical explanation for her not walking down the aisle is that she?s a lesbian and Stedman is just a cover. Really people?

None of us knows these celebrity couples personally and the truest truth about their relationships is that they don?t owe any of us an explanation about the?trajectory?of their partnerships. What?s unfortunate though is the same people who complain about being hounded by their family and friends about marriage and who have explanations on top of explanations for their current relationship status don?t extend the same ?we?re not all cut-from the same I-want-to-be-married-today cloth? courtesy they?re seeking from other people. How is it wrong for Brandy to want to be married, wrong (or an assumed lie)?that Gabby is waiting to be married, and wrong for Oprah to not want to be married? Are they not representative of who we are in actuality: diverse, contemporary woman with different relationship desires? And really, what other options are there outside of these other than it?s not legal for us to get married?

Obviously a lot of personal bias against these women plays into how their takes on relationships and marriage are perceived but at the end of the day we?re doing the same thing to them that?s done to us in the media and on a personal level all the time. Maybe we should just stop asking these women about the m-word period (like we request of other people) since their responses never satisfy us.

Hermit Crabs Form Gangs To Kick Out Owners - Geekosystem

Life in the wilderness ? be it tundra, forest or beach ? is no bowl of cherries. Hermit crabs, though, make things extra tough on one another. Always on the lookout for a new home, smaller hermit crabs will form gangs to kick their larger kin out of the big comfy shells they?re residing in. Once they have, every smaller crab in the team moves up a shell size, leaving the once well-protected crab nothing but a walking tasty treat for a variety of predators.

The Straw Dogs style home invasion tactic has been observed in terrestrial hermit crabs, which makes sense, as the sorts of larger shells a crab can build a home and plan for a family in are plentiful in the ocean, but at a premium on dry land. Bigger shells are important because they let hermits grow into their larger abode and carry more eggs, increasing the chances that they?ll breed successfully. Taken together, these factors make for one of the most cutthroat real estate markets on the planet.

Rather than look for a big shell that?s unoccupied, smaller hermits take a more bullying track ? look for another crab wearing a big shell already, and then take his. To do that, though, the hermits need to do something very un-hermit-like and assemble a posse.?That posse then forms a congo line, from largest to smallest crabs, which works as one unit, eventually tugging the largest crab out of its shell. Once the largest shell is open, its a free for all, with every crab scrambling to get into the largest shell available to them while leaving the unsuspecting crab that?s just been evicted out in the cold, an easy meal for anything that eats hermit crabs on a beach where things that eat hermit crabs are pretty much the rule.

The research is surprising for a couple of reasons. First, it?s an odd case of a notably solitary creature ? you don?t get ?hermit? in your name by being gregarious, after all ? evolving a social means of dealing with a problem. Even weirder, it?s a social activity that actually drives up predation in a species, which is almost unheard of. Finally, it?s evidence that some animals, like some people, are just plain jerks.

Eldercare Resource Center: Medicaid's Benefits for Home Care

We've just published the results from a major effort in which we researched Medicaid's home care benefits in all 50 states. The good news from our research is that Medicaid, in every state, has at least one program that will help families and aging individuals to care for their loved ones at home.

Additional good news is that Medicaid's care at home is not limited to personal assistance with the activities of daily living. In fact, Medicaid will cover a broad range of different support services that help the individual remain living in their home. Furthermore, Medicaid's assistance is not just limited to the individual who requires care. Many states provide assistance to family members and caregivers as well. Assistance such as respite care and caregiver training can be included. Lastly, we found Medicaid's home care assistance programs were provided both in the form of Medicaid waivers (which are not entitlements) and Medicaid State Plans (which are entitlements).

Now our enthusiasm must be tempered somewhat with our other findings. The majority (though not an overwhelming majority) of assistance programs were in the form of Medicaid waivers. Medicaid waivers limit enrollment. Individuals may be qualified but if the enrollment cap has been met, they are put on a waiting list. Waiting list times can last from a few months to many months.

For individuals who may not qualify for Medicaid or who are spending down assets to gain eligibility. Our state by state guide also provides links to each state's non-Medicaid programs that provide assistance for home care. Unfortunately, only about 50% of the states offer specific, non-Medicaid assistance to help elderly individuals remain living at home.

Visit our State by State Guide to Medicaid Home Care.

Demystifying the Nonfiction Book Proposal ... - Write Nonfiction NOW!

How to put sample chapters in a nonfiction book proposalThis final section of a book proposal is pretty self-explanatory. You will simply attach two or three of your best chapters to the end of your book proposal. That said, aspiring authors tend to have some questions about the Sample Chapters anyway. Let me cover a few.

Which chapters should you attach?

As I said, usually your best chapters, but often this includes your first chapter since it should entice readers into the book and offer a good sense of what the book is about.

How many chapters should you include?

You should include however many pages comprise about 25 pages of content. You don?t need more than that for the proposal.

Should these chapters be numbered as part of the proposal?

Yes. They are a continuous part of the proposal, and as such, they also get a heading that says ?Sample Chapters.? Also include the heading and each sample chapter in your table of contents for the proposal so an acquisitions editor can easily flip to the section or to an individual chapter.

Should I get my sample chapters edited professionally?

Yes, if you plan on having the whole book professionally edited prior to sending it off to an agent or acquisitions editor, which I recommend. This way you put your best work forward.

Get your book or proposal written in a month

Given that I am writing this post exactly one week from the start of November, I feel inclined to urge you to get moving on your sample chapters?or possibly your whole nonfiction book manuscript during the month of November. You could even take on your book proposal as a November writing project. Why November? Because it is National Nonfiction Writing Month (NaNonFiWriMo), the time when nonfiction writers participate in the Write Nonfiction in November (WNFIN) challenge. Many writers choose to write a whole book in a month, but you could write your sample chapters instead or your proposal?any work of nonfiction actually meets the challenge rules.

Although WNFIN is not a contest, this year you might actually want to participate and get your book written?and have your proposal?and pitch?ready. Those who complete a book in 30 days get the chance to win a consult with 2 agents during a post-WNFIN challenge pitch fest. You can get some of the information on the contest by reading this post, but all the winning booty has not yet been announced?including the second agent session. Watch for that intel to be released later this week.

Need a bit more inspiration or encouragement? Join Rochelle Melander, author of Write-A-Thon: Write Your Book in 26 Days (And Live to Tell About It), and me for a 1-hour FREE teleseminar on How to Write a Book in a Month on Thursday, November 1 at 5 p.m. Pacific time. In Gaza visit, Qatari emir forges leading role

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? The emir of Qatar on Tuesday became the first head of state to visit the Gaza Strip since Hamas militants seized the territory five years ago, showering almost half a billion dollars and unprecedented political recognition on the Islamic militant group.

The landmark visit highlighted the tumultuous changes that have swept the region during the Arab Spring events over the past two years, pushing once-shunned Islamic movements to the forefront of Mideast politics. Qatar, an oil-rich Gulf state, has encouraged these changes by backing efforts for the ouster of secular regimes.

The emir, who has long sought a role in Palestinian politics, appeared to be seizing an opportunity created by Hamas' break in recent months with its ally Syria. In return for Tuesday's stamp of recognition, the emir may use his leverage to lure Hamas hardliners in Gaza away from their longtime patron Iran, the regional rival of Qatar and other Sunni Muslim-led states.

The arrival of Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani gave Hamas its biggest diplomatic victory yet since violently taking control of Gaza in June 2007 from forces loyal to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Repeated attempts to reconcile, including a Qatari-brokered deal early this year, have failed. Abbas now governs in the West Bank.

The emir received a hero's welcome as he crossed through Gaza's southern border with Egypt. An honor guard greeted him, white and maroon Qatari flags flapped in the streets and a song called "Thank you, Qatar" played on the radio and on TV. Thousands of cheering and waving Palestinians lined the main road to Gaza City to greet the emir, who rolled down the window of his armored car to shake hands with dozens of people. Women on balconies threw flowers and rice on his convoy.

In a speech at Gaza's Islamic University, a Hamas stronghold, the emir called on the Palestinians to heal their bitter rift, saying a unified front is the only way to achieve statehood.

"Why are you staying divided? There are no peace negotiations (between Palestinian factions), and there is no clear strategy of resistance and liberation. Why shouldn't brothers sit together and reconcile?" he said.

Despite the conciliatory language, the emir's visit may have the opposite effect. Hamas hardliners in Gaza have resisted reconciliation, in part because they are reluctant to give up the mini-state they have created.

Though it is shunned internationally, Hamas now runs governmental ministries, armed security forces and border crossings. The emir's visit is likely to solidify Hamas' control and boost its confrontational approach toward Israel.

"Gaza is not alone, and Palestine occupies the hearts of Arabs," Hamas' prime minister, Ismail Haniyeh, jubilantly declared. "Your visit today officially announces the break of the economic blockade and political blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip by the forces of injustice."

Officials in the West Bank made clear their displeasure with the way the visit was handled. Abbas, who seeks a negotiated peace deal with Israel, has seen his popularity plunge because of a four-year standstill in peace efforts and a financial crisis that has left him unable to pay the salaries of tens of thousands of civil servants.

"If this is a one-time visit, we can tolerate it. But we are concerned that others will come and that will reinforce the split," said Yasser Abed Rabbo, an adviser to Abbas. "No one should deal with Gaza as a separate entity from the Palestinian territories and from the Palestinian Authority."

Israel also denounced the Qatari leader's visit. Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor accused the emir of favoring Hamas in the internal Palestinian conflict.

"This is more than strange, especially since Hamas is internationally recognized as a terror group," he said. "By hugging Hamas publicly, the emir of Qatar has thrown peace under the bus."

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said the U.S. hoped "the opportunity was taken to make clear the importance of Palestinians and Israelis talking to each other. And we've been very clear about our concerns about Hamas," she said.

Qatar has long leveraged its energy riches to gain influence in the region. It also has shown tremendous flexibility in its foreign relations, cultivating an image as a bridge builder between religious and secular, and the Arab world and the West.

Qatar was at the forefront of supporting a NATO bombing campaign that helped oust former Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi. It also has helped arm Syrian rebels seeking to overturn President Bashar Assad's regime.

Amid the change, Qatar and other Sunni-led Gulf countries have moved aggressively to undercut the influence of Shiite Muslim-dominated Iran.

For years, Hamas relied heavily on Iran and Syria. The need became even stronger after the militant group seized Gaza in 2007, triggering an Israeli-Egyptian border blockade. Hamas became an international pariah because of its refusal to abandon its militant ideology. Syria hosted the Hamas leadership in exile, while Iran provided cash and weapons to Hamas.

However, the uprising against Assad has made it impossible to maintain that alliance. The revolt was led by fellow Sunnis, some with links to the Muslim Brotherhood, the regional organization that also spawned Hamas. Early this year, Hamas leaders left their Damascus headquarters. The organization's chief in exile, Khaled Mashaal, found a new home in Qatar.

Hamas leaders in Gaza, the group's stronghold, have been reluctant to cut ties with Iran unless a new benefactor steps up. Hamas needs millions of dollars in aid each year to continue running Gaza, an impoverished territory of 1.6 million. The emir's latest gifts may be the push that is needed.

Ahmed Yousef, a Hamas official in Gaza, said Hamas had no plans to cut ties with Iran and that Qatar had not conditioned its aid to that happening.

A Hamas lawmaker involved in the visit said the Qatari leader urged Hamas to reconcile with Abbas' forces and do everything possible to avoid violence with Israel. The lawmaker spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the visit with the media.

Although Hamas has largely refrained from attacking Israel since an Israeli military offensive four years ago, other militant groups remain active in Gaza. Early Tuesday, an Israeli soldier was seriously wounded in an explosion along the border fence with Gaza, and later in the day, militants fired several rockets and shells into Israel. Israel says it holds Hamas responsible for all attacks emanating from Gaza.

Late Tuesday an Israeli airstrike killed one person in Gaza, Palestinian health official Ashraf al-Kidra said. His identity was not immediately known. The Israeli military said in a statement that the target was a rocket squad.

The emir launched a total of $400 million of projects, including plans to build new housing, a hospital and roads. Israel's blockade has prevented construction materials from entering Gaza, fueling a dire shortage of housing and schools. In order to get around the blockade, the materials will be shipped in through Egypt, which is now governed by a new Islamist government.

The emirate has made it clear that the money is not going into Hamas' coffers, but there is no doubt this will help revive flagging popular support for Hamas by generating thousands of jobs in the impoverished territory.

Tiny pores in graphene could give rise to membranes

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Much has been made of graphene's exceptional qualities, from its ability to conduct heat and electricity better than any other material to its unparalleled strength: Worked into a composite material, graphene can repel bullets better than Kevlar. Previous research has also shown that pristine graphene -- a microscopic sheet of carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb pattern -- is among the most impermeable materials ever discovered, making the substance ideal as a barrier film.

But the material may not be as impenetrable as scientists have thought. By engineering relatively large membranes from single sheets of graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition, researchers from MIT, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and elsewhere have found that the material bears intrinsic defects, or holes in its atom-sized armor. In experiments, the researchers found that small molecules like salts passed easily through a graphene membrane's tiny pores, while larger molecules were unable to penetrate.

The results, the researchers say, point not to a flaw in graphene, but to the possibility of promising applications, such as membranes that filter microscopic contaminants from water, or that separate specific types of molecules from biological samples.

"No one has looked for holes in graphene before," says Rohit Karnik, associate professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. "There's a lot of chemical methods that can be used to modify these pores, so it's a platform technology for a new class of membranes."

Karnik and his colleagues, including researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology and King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, have published their results in the journal ACS Nano.

Karnik worked with MIT graduate student Sean O'Hern to look for materials "that could lead to not just incremental changes, but substantial leaps in terms of the way membranes perform." In particular, the team cast around for materials with two key attributes, high flux and tunability: that is, membranes that quickly filter fluids, but are also easily tailored to let certain molecules through while trapping others. The group settled on graphene, in part because of its extremely thin structure and its strength: A sheet of graphene is as thin as a single atom, but strong enough to let high volumes of fluids through without shredding apart.

The team set out to engineer a membrane spanning 25 square millimeters -- a surface area that is large by graphene standards, holding about a quadrillion carbon atoms. They used graphene synthesized by chemical vapor deposition, borrowing on expertise from the research group of Jing Kong, the ITT Career Development Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. The team then developed techniques to transfer the graphene sheet to a polycarbonate substrate dotted with holes.

Once the researchers successfully transferred the graphene, they began to experiment with the resulting membrane, exposing it to flowing water containing molecules of varying sizes. They theorized that if graphene were indeed impermeable, the molecules would be blocked from flowing across. However, experiments showed otherwise, as researchers observed salts flowing through the membrane.

As another test, the team exposed a copper foil with graphene grown on it to a chemical agent that dissolves copper. Instead of protecting the metal, graphene let the agent through, corroding the underlying copper. To test the size of the pores within graphene, the group attempted to filter water with larger molecules. It appeared that there was a limit to the size of the pores, as larger molecules were unable to pass through the membrane.

As a final experiment, Karnik and O'Hern observed the actual holes in the graphene membrane, looking at the material through a high-powered electron microscope at ORNL in collaboration with Juan-Carlos Idrobo. They found that pores ranged in size from about 1 to 12 nanometers -- just wide enough to selectively let some small molecules through.

"Right now we know from this characterization how the graphene behaves, and what kind of intrinsic pores it has," Karnik says. "In some sense it's the first step to practically realizing graphene-based membranes."

Karnik adds that a near-term application for such membranes may include a portable sensor in which a layer of graphene "could shield the sensor from the environment," letting through only a molecule or contaminant of interest. Another use may be in drug delivery, with graphene, dotted with pores of a determined size, delivering therapies in a controlled release.

"We're right now in the process of transferring more graphene to different substrates and making holes of our own, making a viable membrane for water filtration," O'Hern says.

Scott Bunch, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Colorado, says the group's results are the first demonstration that graphene bears defects. The membrane developed by the group "has the potential to be a revolutionary membrane" that separates particles at the molecular scale.

"The issue that now needs to be addressed is whether one can discriminate between smaller molecules," Bunch says. "Once this happens, graphene membranes will eventually live up to the truly remarkable properties that they promise."

Other researchers involved in the work are Cameron Stewart, Michael Boutilier, Sreekar Bhaviripudi, Sarit Das, Tahar Laoui and Muataz Atieh. This work was funded by the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals through the Center for Clean Water and Clean Energy at MIT and KFUPM, and was also supported by the ORNL ShaRE program.
