Nexus 4 trots out in white, sets unicorn fans aflutter

Nexus 4 trots out in white, sets unicorn fans aflutter

We're pretty fond of unicorns white phones here at Engadget, especially rare ones like the white Nokia N9. So you can imagine our excitement when we came across this photo of a white Nexus 4 over at Phone Arena. While rumors of a white Nexus 4 have been swirling around the intertubes for some time, a picture speaks a thousand words, right? We took a long, eagle-eyed look at this image and didn't see any signs of trickery. Obviously this doesn't mean a white Nexus 4 is on the way -- it could just be a dummy handset and / or a one-off prototype. Still, if last year's white Galaxy Nexus is any indication, there's a chance this is the real deal. We've reached out to Google and LG for comment, so stay tuned -- it sure would be lovely to add this beast to our stable.

World Chefs: Thomson dishes up Washington state from Seattle to Spokane

NEW YORK |
Wed Jan 30, 2013 12:26pm EST

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? When food writer Jess Thomson moved to Seattle, Washington, she expected to find the adventuresome cooking for which the city is famous. But she admits to being pleasantly surprised by the rich diversity of the rest of the state.

The 150 recipes in her book ?Dishing Up Washington? attempt to capture the authentic regional flavors of the entire state, from Seattle to Spokane, Yakima to Walla Walla.

?It is a total food heaven,? said Thomson, cookbook author, recipe developer and food blogger. ?I knew it would be delicious but I?m not sure I knew how much would be available here and how constantly I would be bombarded with really great food.?

She spoke to Reuters about discovering the distinctive foods of Washington and the state?s climate and locavore tradition.

Q: Is this your first cookbook?

A: ?This is my fourth cookbook; three in my name, one that I ghostwrote.?

Q: Did you write the recipes for this book?

A: ?The book is a little bit unique because it is about 60 percent recipes that I?ve written inspired by the state?s ingredients and about 40 percent recipes by chefs, farmers and artisans from all over the state.?

Q: What was your purpose with this book?

A: ?I wanted to show not just best restaurants but ingredients that drive those restaurants ? what it?s like to run a potato farm and the simple potato soup the farmer?s mother makes, which is super warming, super delicious but not high-falutin chef-y approach that I think many Seattle chefs might have taken ? I wanted to show the guy who grows saffron on the Olympic peninsula, and the tomato grower in northeastern Washington. She doesn?t have a restaurant but she?s important to the state because she grows these really fantastic tomatoes.?

Q: How would you characterize the cuisine of Washington State?

A: ?It?s adventuresome coastal cooking that depends heavily on local ingredients.?

Q: Which ingredients are typical of the state?

A: ?Stone fruits like peaches and cherries are huge here; tree fruits like apples and pears; fish and shellfish, mainly crab, oysters, mussels, and salmon. Then there?s really great dairy and cheese, mostly from the northwestern part of the state. The state is also well known for larger crops like grapes, wheat and beef.?

Q: How does Seattle?s famously rainy climate affect the cuisine?

A: ?The state is sort of divided by the Cascade Mountains into two distinct climates: the wet half towards the west and the drier

Health, Wellness and Fitness | Dayton City Paper

?By Michael Roizen, M.D., and Mehmet Oz, M.D.

More than 20 million Americans and Canadians take ibuprofen every day, often popping the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) before they exercise or do heavy-duty chores ? to prevent muscle aches and pains. But a recent report says ibuprofen plus strenuous activity may be bad news for your intestines; it seems to trigger what docs call ?leaky gut.?

Long periods of very strenuous activity reduce blood flow to your digestive system (your body needs that blood elsewhere!). This makes the lining of your intestines vulnerable to injury. Ibuprofen further reduces your body?s ability to protect and repair that lining. Combine these two effects, and the lining of the intestines becomes compromised, which can allow digestive enzymes and even bacteria to migrate from your intestines into your bloodstream.

That?s what Dutch scientists recently concluded when they found that endurance athletes who take ibuprofen before they exercise had elevated levels of a protein that signaled intestinal leakage into the bloodstream. But they also found that the elevated protein levels disappeared about an hour after exercising stopped. So, no one is positive if this phenomenon does lasting damage. There?s even some thought that a short blast of unexpected visitors in the bloodstream could help prime your immune system to better fight off invaders. But considering that up to 90 percent of endurance athletes take ibuprofen before most work-outs and that so many other folks rely on it from time to time or daily, we recommend a new approach to managing exercise-related discomfort or pain. Here?s our advice:

Ease into heavy-duty activity. Weekend warriors, listen up. Instead of going from zero (you on the couch) to 100 mph (you doing a two-hour boot-camp exercise class or all-day yard work), make sure you get some exercise every day. Do a little bit (30 additional minutes of walking a day); then add a little bit more (each week, increase by 10 to 15 minutes per day); and then do even a little more (you?re aiming for a total of 10,000 steps a day). When you build strength and endurance gradually, your muscles will sustain less microtrauma ? microscopic tears and swellings ? which translates into major aches the day after. It?s the best way to minimize delayed muscle soreness.

Reserve NSAIDs for swelling and pain. Over-the-counter NSAIDs are effective pain relievers, but they are intended for only short-term use. Never use an over-the-counter NSAID for more than 10 days, and make sure you take the dose as outlined on the label. Don?t take extra (more than 25 percent of you do). And don?t take these medications more frequently than recommended. Almost two-thirds of you do that!

Already achy? Chill out. Use indirect cold on tired muscles as soon as you can after exercising. Applying an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 20 minutes or less discourages excess inflammation and reduces pain dramatically. Save heat for later on; using a heating pad set on low for a short time will increase circulation and encourage healing. Heat is also a good soother for aching joints.

What if you?re taking aspirin daily? Many folks take aspirin for its benefits against cancer, heart attack and stroke; if that?s you, by all means, stay with it. (We take aspirin with a half-glass of warm water before and after; it helps the aspirin dissolve faster, reducing the risk of stomach and intestinal bleeding and your risk of distress.) Just make sure to take the aspirin more than two hours before or one hour after you exercise.

We haven?t pointed it out recently, but aspirin really is a miracle pill, and so is ibuprofen. But taking the two together seems to cancel out their anticancer and anti-heart attack benefits, so stay with aspirin if your doc approves (since there are potential side effects, always check with your doc). If you must take ibuprofen also, do it 30 minutes before you take aspirin or eight hours afterward.

Gunman shoots 2 at Seattle bar before being killed by police - U.S. ...

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

A gunman shot his ex-girlfriend and an employee at a Seattle bar before being killed by police Sunday night, authorities said.

The shooter walked into The Twilight Exit about 10:15 p.m. local time (1:15 a.m ET Monday) and opened fire, first wounding his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend then a 30-year-old bar worker who tried to intervene, Seattle police said in a statement.

Police said the suspect later raised his gun and fired at them. One officer returned fire, killing the man.

The victims were taken to a hospital and their injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, police said. The gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said there were ?"a number of witnesses" inside the bar when the shooting occurred.

The Twilight Exit's?Facebook page has more than 2,800 "likes" and customers were already posting messages of concern early Monday.

Google faces UK legal action over Apple privacy concerns (Wired UK)

Google could face a bill of millions if British legal action over iPhone, iPad and Mac privacy concerns is successful.

The claims, co-ordinated by London-based law firm Olswang, centre around the way Google circumvented privacy settings on devices using Apple's Safari internet browser between September 2011 and February 2012 by installing cookies to allow user-targeted advertising through its DoubleClick ad network.

According to Olswang, "The claimants thought that cookies were being blocked on their devices because of Safari's strict default privacy settings and separate assurances being given by Google at the time. This was not the case."

If any of this sounds familiar it's because Google was already on the receiving end of a $22.5 million (?14.4 million) fine from the Federal Trade Commission in the US for the same thing in 2012.

Alexander Hanff, a privacy campaigner working with Olswang on the legal claims, added that, although the focus is on protecting consumer privacy, a successful action by UK Safari users could put the US fine in the shade.

"This group action is not about getting rich by suing Google, this lawsuit is about sending a very clear message to corporations that circumventing privacy controls will result in significant consequences," Hanff told the Guardian. "The lawsuit has the potential of costing Google tens of millions, perhaps even breaking ?100 million in damages given the potential number of claimants -- making it the biggest group action ever launched in the UK."

Speaking about the US fine, Google did not admit any wrongdoing and stated: "We have now changed [a help page the FTC claimed misled consumers over Google's cookie usage] and taken steps to remove the ad cookies, which collected no personal information, from Apple's browsers."

However, UK claimant, 74-year-old Judith Vidal-Hall, said: "Google claims it does not collect personal data but doesn't say who decides what information is 'personal'. Whether something is private or not should be up to the internet surfer, not Google. We are best placed to decide, not them."

Dan Tench, a partner at Olswang, said: "Google has a responsibility to consumers and should be accountable for the trust placed in them. We hope that they will take this opportunity to give Safari users a proper explanation about what happened, to apologise and, where appropriate, compensate the victims of their intrusion."

Bugs in the atmosphere: Significant microorganism populations found in middle and upper troposphere

Jan. 28, 2013 ? In what is believed to be the first study of its kind, researchers used genomic techniques to document the presence of significant numbers of living microorganisms -- principally bacteria -- in the middle and upper troposphere, that section of the atmosphere approximately four to six miles above Earth's surface.

Whether the microorganisms routinely inhabit this portion of the atmosphere -- perhaps living on carbon compounds also found there -- or whether they were simply lofted there from Earth's surface isn't yet known. The finding is of interest to atmospheric scientists, because the microorganisms could play a role in forming ice that may impact weather and climate. Long-distance transport of the bacteria could also be of interest for disease transmission models.

The microorganisms were documented in air samples taken as part of NASA's Genesis and Rapid Intensification Processes (GRIP) program to study low- and high-altitude air masses associated with tropical storms. The sampling was done from a DC-8 aircraft over both land and ocean, including the Caribbean Sea and portions of the Atlantic Ocean. The sampling took place before, during and after two major tropical hurricanes -- Earl and Karl -- in 2010.

The research, which has been supported by NASA and the National Science Foundation, was scheduled to be published online January 28th by the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We did not expect to find so many microorganisms in the troposphere, which is considered a difficult environment for life," said Kostas Konstantinidis, an assistant professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "There seems to be quite a diversity of species, but not all bacteria make it into the upper troposphere."

Aboard the aircraft, a filter system designed by the research team collected particles -- including the microorganisms -- from outside air entering the aircraft's sampling probes. The filters were analyzed using genomic techniques including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and gene sequencing, which allowed the researchers to detect the microorganisms and estimate their quantities without using conventional cell-culture techniques.

When the air masses studied originated over the ocean, the sampling found mostly marine bacteria. Air masses that originated over land had mostly terrestrial bacteria. The researchers also saw strong evidence that the hurricanes had a significant impact on the distribution and dynamics of microorganism populations.

The study showed that viable bacterial cells represented, on average, around 20 percent of the total particles detected in the size range of 0.25 to 1 microns in diameter. By at least one order of magnitude, bacteria outnumbered fungi in the samples, and the researchers detected 17 different bacteria taxa -- including some that are capable of metabolizing the carbon compounds that are ubiquitous in the atmosphere -- such as oxalic acid.

The microorganisms could have a previously-unidentified impact on cloud formation by supplementing (or replacing) the abiotic particles that normally serve as nuclei for forming ice crystals, said Athanasios Nenes, a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

"In the absence of dust or other materials that could provide a good nucleus for ice formation, just having a small number of these microorganisms around could facilitate the formation of ice at these altitudes and attract surrounding moisture," Nenes said. "If they are the right size for forming ice, they could affect the clouds around them."

The microorganisms likely reach the troposphere through the same processes that launch dust and sea salt skyward. "When sea spray is generated, it can carry bacteria because there are a lot of bacteria and organic materials on the surface of the ocean," Nenes said.

The research brought together microbiologists, atmospheric modelers and environmental researchers using the latest technologies for studying DNA. For the future, the researchers would like to know if certain types of bacteria are more suited than others for surviving at these altitudes. The researchers also want to understand the role played by the microorganisms -- and determine whether or not they are carrying on metabolic functions in the troposphere.

"For these organisms, perhaps, the conditions may not be that harsh," said Konstantinidis. "I wouldn't be surprised if there is active life and growth in clouds, but this is something we cannot say for sure now."

Other researchers have gathered biological samples from atop mountains or from snow samples, but gathering biological material from a jet aircraft required a novel experimental setup. The researchers also had to optimize protocols for extracting DNA from levels of biomass far lower than what they typically study in soils or lakes.

"We have demonstrated that our technique works, and that we can get some interesting information," Nenes said. "A big fraction of the atmospheric particles that traditionally would have been expected to be dust or sea salt may actually be bacteria. At this point we are just seeing what's up there, so this is just the beginning of what we hope to do."

Toyota back on top as global auto sales champ

1 hr.

Toyota has officially reclaimed its global sales crown, the maker confirming it produced 9.75 million vehicles in 2012.

That was slightly ahead of a preliminary tally Toyota forecast as the year came to a close and locks it in first place ahead of General Motors, which sold 9.29 million vehicles.? Volkswagen, at 9.1 million, came in third for 2012.

Toyota?s sales were slightly lower than the company had projected earlier in the year, the shortfall reflecting the ongoing dispute between Japan and China over a chain of small, uninhabited islands both nations claim.?

In customary fashion, Toyota officials downplayed the sales results. ?Rather than going after numbers, we hope to make fine products, one by one, to keep out customers satisfied. The numbers are just a result of our policy. And our policy will continue unchanged,? Toyota spokeswoman Shino Yamada told the Associated Press.?

The Detroit Bureau:?US Auto Sales Surging as New Year Gets Underway

Nonetheless, it marked a significant comeback for the Japanese giant which first captured the global sales crown in 2008, displacing GM after seven decades as the sales leader. The U.S. maker plunged into bankruptcy the following year, recovering only with the assistance of a massive government loan.

With production back to normal, Toyota saw its sales in the home Japanese market surge 35% in 2012 while overseas sales jumped 23%.? Adding additional models to the ?family,? the Prius line firmed up its position as the world?s best-selling hybrid nameplate.
Toyota briefly fell to third in the global chase in 2011, the maker suffering significant production cuts in the wake of Japan?s March earthquake and tsunami. It didn?t fully restore its worldwide production network to normal operations until the end of the year.

But not everything went as well as expected ? notably in China where Toyota was just one of many Japanese businesses to suffer as the dispute over the Senkuko Islands ? which the Chinese call the Daioyu ? flared up. A Toyota dealership was torched and mobs destroyed many of the maker?s products. Sales fell by roughly half in the early weeks of the dispute though they have begun to recover more recently.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Mazda betting on alliances with Toyota, Fiat

Toyota did have some other issues, notably a surge of safety-related problems including additional recalls related to the maker?s unintended acceleration issue. In all, Toyota recalled more vehicles than any other maker in the American market in 2012, and it ended the year by agreeing to an estimated $1.2 billion settlement related to the unintended acceleration issue. Even so, most analysts say the maker?s reputation escaped with relatively little damage.

Toyota is forecasting another increase in sales for 2013, hoping to reach a record 9.91 million. That is still short of an earlier projection of at least 10 million, however.

General Motors officials have not yet set out their own forecast and that could depend on the strength of the ongoing U.S. recovery. Earlier this month, Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson said the maker expected sales in the States to reach somewhere between 15.0 million and 15.5 million for 2013.?

The Detroit Bureau:?Toyota Settles First of 100s of Wrongful Death, Injury Lawsuits

The wild card is Volkswagen, the aggressive German maker laying out plans to snatch the sales ground by the time it wraps up its current, 10-year growth plan in 2016.? The weakness of the home European market could delay that strategy, though VW hopes to offset that by stressing China, Latin America and the recovering U.S. market where it was one of the fastest-growing brands in 2012

'Fruitvale,' 'Blood Brother' win Sundance Awards

PARK CITY, Utah (AP) ? The dramatic film "Fruitvale" and the documentary "Blood Brother" won over audiences and Sundance Film Festival judges.

Both American films won audience awards and grand jury prizes Saturday at the Sundance Awards.

"Fruitvale" is based on the true story of Oscar Grant, who was 22 years old when he was shot and killed in a public transit station in Oakland, Calif. First-time filmmaker Ryan Coogler wrote and directed the dramatic narrative.

"This project was about humanity, about human beings and how we treat each other; how we treat the people that we love the most, and how we treat the people that we don't know," the 26-year-old said as he accepted the final prize of the night. "To get this award means that it had a profound impact on the audience that saw it, on the people that were responsible for picking it up. And this goes back to my home, to the Bay Area, where Oscar Grant lived, breathed, slept, loved, fought, had fun, and survived for 22 years."

Fox Searchlight founder and Sundance juror Tom Rothman said "Fruitvale" was recognized for "its skillful realization, its devastating emotional impact and its moral and social urgency ? and for anyone out there who thinks for one second that movies don't matter and can't make a difference in the world.

"This will not be the last time you guys walk to a podium," he added.

The U.S. documentary winner, "Blood Brother" follows a young American, Rocky Braat, who moved to India to work with orphans infected with HIV.

"This means so much to so many kids," director Steve Hoover said as he accepted the award.

The Cambodian film "A River Changes Course" won the grand jury prize for international documentary, and a narrative film from South Korea, "Jiseul," claimed the grand jury prize for dramatic world cinema.

Ryan: Obama doesn't actually think 'we have a fiscal crisis?

Ryan (NBC)

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan lashed out at President Barack Obama on Sunday, saying the commander in chief does not have a full grasp of the budget problems facing the U.S. economy.

"I don't think that the president actually thinks we have a fiscal crisis," Ryan told NBC's David Gregory on "Meet The Press" in his first live interview since the 2012 presidential campaign, when he was Mitt Romney's running mate.

Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman repeatedly criticized President Obama's understanding of the national debt. "The president got his additional revenues," Ryan said. "So that's behind us."

The former Republican vice presidential candidate said that while Democrats may have gotten higher taxes on the wealthy as part of the New Year's deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, that's all they'll get.

"Are we for raising revenues? No we're not," Ryan said. "If you keep raising revenues, you're not going to get decent tax reform."

Ryan also addressed a pair politically-divisive issues: immigration reform and gun control. Via NBC:

Ryan, who has praised a bipartisan set of immigration reforms offered by Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, said he was cautiously optimistic about the prospects for immigration reform this year. But Ryan said that Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike would closely watch Obama's speech on Tuesday in Nevada on that topic.

And of the president's gun control measures, Ryan suggested openness to embracing some measures--like requiring universal background checks on gun sales--while expressing skittishness toward other elements of the plan, like the ban on assault weapons.

And as far as his political aspirations for 2016 are concerned, Ryan said it's too early for him to talk about.

"I think it's just premature. I've got an important job to do," Ryan said. "I'll decide later about that."

Newtown residents join gun control march in Washington

Susan Walsh / AP

People walk from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument in Washington, Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, during a march on Washington for gun control.

By Becky Bratu, NBC News

Residents of Newtown, Conn., the scene of a school massacre in which 20 children and six adults were killed last month, joined thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington on Saturday for a march supporting gun control.

Similar organized demonstrations were planned in support of gun control in about a dozen other places across the United States, according to organizers.

In addition to the 100 people who traveled together from Newtown, organizers told The Associated Press participants from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia would join the demonstration.

Alongside Mayor Vincent Gray, a crowd that stretched for about two blocks marched down Constitution Avenue toward the Washington Monument, where speakers called for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition. Some of the demonstrators held signs that read "We Are Sandy Hook."

Education Secretary Arne Duncan addressed the crowd, saying he and President Barack Obama would work to enact gun control policies, the AP reported.

"This is about trying to create a climate in which our children can grow up free of fear," he said, according to the AP.

"We must act, we must act, we must act," Duncan said.

According to the AP, demonstrators held signs that read "Ban Assault Weapons Now," "Stop NRA" and "Gun Control Now." Other signs carried the names of victims of gun violence.

The silent march is organized by Molly Smith, artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner.

"With the drum roll, the consistency of the mass murders and the shock of it, it is always something that is moving and devastating to me. And then, it's as if I move on," Smith told the AP. "And in this moment, I can't move on. I can't move on.

"I think it's because it was children, babies," she told the AP. "I was horrified by it."

The event is co-sponsored by One Million Moms for Gun Control, an independent organization that is also responsible for similar demonstrations in cities such as San Francisco, Chicago and Austin, Texas.

The Newtown massacre has reignited the debate over firearms in the United States, and last week Obama laid out a series of measures intended to curb gun violence, most significantly proposals to limit the size of ammunition magazines, ban assault weapons and require universal background checks on firearm purchases. That plan won little praise from Republicans.

Earlier this month, New York lawmakers approved the toughest gun control law in the nation, expanding the state's existing assault weapons ban and addressing gun ownership by those with mental illnesses.

Supporters of gun control held a rally in Washington D.C. calling for action following the school shooting tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. NBC's Kristen Welker reports.

Evolution inspires more efficient solar cell design: Geometric pattern maximizes time light is trapped in solar cell

Jan. 25, 2013 ? The sun's energy is virtually limitless, but harnessing its electricity with today's single-crystal silicon solar cells is extremely expensive -- 10 times pricier than coal, according to some estimates. Organic solar cells -- polymer solar cells that use organic materials to absorb light and convert it into electricity -- could be a solution, but current designs suffer because polymers have less-than-optimal electrical properties.

Researchers at Northwestern University have now developed a new design for organic solar cells that could lead to more efficient, less expensive solar power. Instead of attempting to increase efficiency by altering the thickness of the solar cell's polymer layer -- a tactic that has preciously garnered mixed results -- the researchers sought to design the geometric pattern of the scattering layer to maximize the amount of time light remained trapped within the cell.

Using a mathematical search algorithm based on natural evolution, the researchers pinpointed a specific geometrical pattern that is optimal for capturing and holding light in thin-cell organic solar cells.

The resulting design exhibited a three-fold increase over the Yablonovitch Limit, a thermodynamic limit developed in the 1980s that statistically describes how long a photon can be trapped in a semiconductor.

In the newly designed organic solar cell, light first enters a 100-nanometer-thick "scattering layer," a geometrically-patterned dielectric layer designed to maximize the amount of light transmitted into the cell. The light is then transmitted to the active layer, where it is converted into electricity.

"We wanted to determine the geometry for the scattering layer that would give us optimal performance," said Cheng Sun, assistant professor of mechanical engineering in Northwestern's McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science and co-author of the paper. "But with so many possibilities, it's difficult to know where to start, so we looked to laws of natural selection to guide us."

The researchers employed a genetic algorithm, a search process that mimics the process of natural evolution, explained Wei Chen, Wilson-Cook Professor in Engineering Design and professor of mechanical engineering at McCormick and co-investigator of the research.

"Due to the highly nonlinear and irregular behavior of the system, you must use an intelligent approach to find the optimal solution," Chen said. "Our approach is based on the biologically evolutionary process of survival of the fittest."

The researchers began with dozens of random design elements, then "mated" and analyzed their offspring to determine their particular light-trapping performance. This process was carried out over more than 20 generations and also accounted for evolutionary principles of crossover and genetic mutation.

The resulting pattern will be fabricated with partners at Argonne National Laboratory.

Yandex Confirms Wonder, A Voice-Powered Social Search App, As A U.S. ?Experiment,? Gets Legal Advice On Why It Shouldn?t Irk Facebook

photo (18)Yandex -- the so-called "Google of Russia" -- ?has confirmed today that it is launching the social search app Wonder, combining its own proprietary search algorithms with data from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare, along with voice recognition from Nuance, in an iOS app. Yandex is launching the app in the U.S. only, and as a "pure experiment" -- although it will also be incorporating some of the key technologies in Wonder into more apps soon, and will also be considering how to roll out Wonder itself more widely. "It all depends on user feedback," a company spokesperson tells TechCrunch. We first broke the news about this app earlier this month, and yesterday published early pictures of how the app would look and other details.

Jindal: GOP should change 'just about everything'

(AP) ? Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is calling on the Republican Party to "recalibrate the compass of conservatism" as the GOP rebounds from painful Election Day losses.

The governor will deliver the keynote address at the Republican National Committee's winter meeting Thursday night in Charlotte, N.C., becoming the latest high-profile conservative from outside Washington to call for fundamental changes inside the GOP.

In speech excerpts released earlier in the day, Jindal says the Republican Party doesn't need to change its values, but, "might need to change just about everything else we do."

"We do not need to change what we believe as conservatives ? our principles are timeless," Jindal says. "But we do need to re-orient our focus to the place where conservatism thrives: in the real world beyond the Washington Beltway."

The GOP is too focused on number-crunching on Capitol Hill, he continues, and not focused enough on economic growth across the nation.

"Today's conservatism is completely wrapped up in solving the hideous mess that is the federal budget, the burgeoning deficits, the mammoth federal debt, the shortfall in our entitlement programs," he says. "We seem to have an obsession with government bookkeeping. This is a rigged game, and it is the wrong game for us to play."

The comments come a day after the House passed a bill to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first-time default for at least four months, defusing a looming crisis setting up a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit. The House passed the measure on a bipartisan basis as majority Republicans back away from their previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equivalent level of spending cuts.

"The Republican Party must become the party of growth, the party of a prosperous future that is based in our economic growth and opportunity that is based in every community in this great country and that is not based in Washington, D.C.," Jindal says.

The Louisiana governor's comments come shortly after another high-profile Republican based outside Washington publicly blasted GOP leadership on Capitol Hill.

One of the party's most popular voices, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, earlier in the month criticized his party's "toxic internal politics" after House Republicans initially declined to approve disaster relief for victims of Superstorm Sandy. He said it was "disgusting to watch" their actions and he faulted the GOP's most powerful elected official, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio.

Republican officials from across the country are gathering in North Carolina this week to begin shaping a path forward following their party's November shellacking.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., told reporters on the sidelines of the meeting Thursday that Republicans also need to develop a sound strategy for confronting the Obama administration, suggesting House Republicans could use hearings to expose waste and promote better ideas.

"A lot of Republicans frankly spent the last two years saying 'Oh gee, we don't have to do much because after Obama loses we'll work with the new Republican president.' Well, that world ain't there," Gingrich said. "So now they have to make adjustments. They've got to understand that this is a different game."

The six biggest moments from the season premiere of ?The Ultimate Fighter?

The latest version of "The Ultimate Fighter" debuted on Tuesday night. For the first time in many, many seasons, I enjoyed the show. Instead of focusing on the animosity between coaches, it brought out the stories of each of the fighters. It was a welcome change. Here were the biggest moments of the two-hour premiere:

-- The opening montage: From the start, TUF looked different than it had before. The filming style felt more like an "NFL Films" production than previous TUFs. That started with the opening montage, with close-ups of the coaches, Dana White and the fighters talking about why they want to be on the show.

-- Families fighters and friends being allowed in the gym: Seeing Adam Cella's family celebrate after his win set the tone for the rest of the show. On previous TUFs, fighters would talk about their devotion to their amily and friends, but it was hard to connect with them when all we saw were pictures. Now, as the season goes on, we'll know who each man is fighting for much more richly.

-- Zak Cummings' knockout of Nik Fekete: It was so quick that I wasn't sure what happened. The replay showed Fekete didn't protect himself when throwing a kick, and that ended his show at making "The Ultimate Fighter."

-- Sonnen needling Jones over Bubba McDaniel: The "Chael Shtick" didn't come out much on Tuesday night, and that's a good thing. Over the course of the show, it would get old very quickly. But Sonnen's subtle, sarcastic picking at Jones was fun, particularly when it came to Jones' teammate and if Jones would pick him for his team.

-- "I grew up on food stamps, powdered milk and spam." With the families around, there were more tears than usual for the opening show. No episode was more moving than Kito Andrews saying goodbye to his kids, and talking about why it's so important for him to win. Unfortunately, Andrews lost the decision.

-- Uriah Hall's decision over Andy Endz: The two put on such a great fight that Sonnen stood and cheered for it. Afterwards, they shared a quiet moment where Hall thanked Endz, and Endz told Hall to win the show. It was one of the moments that reminded fans that most fighters support each other, even when they haven't met before.

What did you think of the show? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Scottsdale Homes a Steal ? But For How Long

The Scottsdale real estate market has undergone amazing changes in the past year. The prices hit bottom in late 2011 and increased slowly throughout all of 2012. Golf Homes in Scottsdale

Although the market has been shifting for over a year, suddenly everyone is talking about it. There are continual news stories in the local and national press about the gains in the market. Phoenix-Scottsdale is one of the liveliest and robust markets in the country.

How long will the prices continue to rise? The future looks bright for 2013. I predict 2013 will be a positive year in the Scottsdale real estate market, but of course no one knows. What we do know is that buyers are taking advantage of prices while they are still affordable. Since we hit bottom, suddenly everyone is jumping off of the fence and getting into the market. As more buyers flood into Scottsdale trying to pick up a deal, the number of homes on the market is shrinking. We had only half as many homes on the market at the end of 2012 than we did at the end of 2010. As inventory shrinks, prices are nudged upward. Check out the Scottsdale home prices charts. It is pretty clear how much the market has changed in a short period of time.

Many of those buyers are investors who see the homes as mere commodities, similar to a stock or bond. Other buyers are families who want to use the home for family vacations and gatherings. Pre-retirees make up a big percentage of buyers in North Scottsdale. Those are people who aren?t quite ready to retire yet but want to lay the foundation for their retirement plans now. They know that the type of home they want, may not be in their price range in 3 or 5 years. The prices of golf homes in Scottsdale golf communities are rising especially fast. They are buying the home now while prices are still low. Generally the pre-retirees use the home as a vacation home for a few years and then it eventually becomes a place to enjoy their retirement in the sun.

Whatever your reason for purchasing a home in Scottsdale, you would be wise to watch the Scottsdale real estate trends closely. Don?t wait too long to take advantage of our low prices in Scottsdale. Contact us to start your home search or schedule an appointment to view homes in Scottsdale AZ.

Bank of England's King says time to review inflation remit

BELFAST (Reuters) - The Bank of England's inflation-targeting remit needs to be fine-tuned but should not undergo fundamental change, central bank governor Mervyn King said in a speech on Tuesday.

He also said that the central bank was ready to restart bond purchases or cut interest rates if needed to boost the economy, but that Britain needed more fundamental reforms if it was to exceed the "gentle recovery" he expects for 2013.

King steps down in June, and his successor Mark Carney, head of the Bank of Canada, has promoted long-term commitments to low rates, which are also in favour at the U.S. Federal Reserve.

To date the Bank has been unenthusiastic about explicit interest rate commitments, arguing its existing policy framework is clearer than other central banks'.

And Chancellor George Osborne, who ultimately decides the bank's goals, said last month that while he welcomed debate, there would need to be a strong case for change.

However, in what is likely to be his last speech to be delivered outside London, King said that it was time for the Bank and the government to think again.

"Recent actions by central banks and governments in a number of industrialised countries have raised questions about the frameworks within which monetary policy is being conducted," he said. "In the UK ... it would be sensible to review the arrangements for setting monetary policy," King said.

The changes King appears to have in mind are small, and Sam Tombs, a UK economist at Capital Economics, said his remarks may have been aimed at forestalling calls for bigger changes.

"King used his speech to pour cold water on recent clamours for a change in the monetary policy framework and ... emphasised the merits and successes of the current regime.

"However, he conceded that the current framework could be reformed ... (and) perhaps hinted that he is open to the Bank mirroring the U.S. Fed's recent guidance," he said.

In the text of his speech, King referred to the Fed's decision to state levels to which unemployment would probably need to fall to before it started to raise interest rates.

"Is there a gain from trying to quantify how the (Bank's) Monetary Policy Committee should manage the trade-off between growth and inflation in the short run?," King asked.

"How much discretion to give to the MPC and how much should remain with the Chancellor is an interesting question that was raised, but not fully resolved, in 1997," he said, referring to the date when the Bank gained operational independence.

King said Osborne may want to be more explicit about how fast the central bank is expected to return inflation to target.

INFLATION OVERSHOOT

Inflation has been above its 2 percent goal since December 2009, and King said he expected it to remain so for most of 2013. The central bank's forecasts do not see it firmly back at 2 percent until the second half of 2014.

This is in line with the bank's current interpretation of its mandate, under which it sets monetary policy to get inflation to 2 percent within 2-3 years.

In his comments about the more immediate outlook for British monetary policy, King left his options open, though his remarks are unlikely to change economists' expectations that the central bank will not add to its 375 billion pounds of asset purchases any time soon.

"We are ready to provide more stimulus if it is needed," King said, adding the bank would continue to assess whether to cut interest rates again, something it has resisted since March 2009 lest it hurt fragile banks or building societies.

Although inflation was likely to remain above target for most of 2013, the MPC could look past this while it was driven by semi-regulated prices such as university tuition fees rather than market-generated price rises, King said.

Nonetheless, more asset purchases or rate cuts would not be enough to get Britain's economy back on track.

"Relying on generalised monetary stimulus alone ... is not a panacea," King said.

Britain's economy shrank about 6 percent in the 2008-09 financial crisis, and has recovered much more slowly than its peers. Growth in the last three months of 2012 was likely to have been "considerably weaker" than in the previous quarter, continuing a trend of zig-zagging growth rates, King said.

A more solid recovery required three things, King said, citing supply-side reforms, stronger euro zone growth and restructuring Britain's banks.

One person critical, two others in hospital after Texas college shooting

HOUSTON (Reuters) - One person was in critical condition and two others were taken to hospital with injuries after a shooting broke out between two people on the campus of Lone Star College near Houston on Tuesday, an official with an ambulance dispatch company said.

"We did transport three patients from the scene," said Mark Smith, an official with Harris county Emergency Corps which dispatches ambulances in that area.

"The patients were described as one critical, two as urgent. My understanding is that at least one of the patients had heart issues, not gunshots," he said.

Smith said he had been told that the shooting took place in the school library, which is near the center of the campus.

Sheriff's Office spokesman Armando Tello said, "We do have, we believe, 3 people injured at this time. We also have a person of interest that's being detained." He gave no further details.

A second shooter fled the campus, according to college spokesman Jed Young. Neither police nor Young said whether the second shooter had been apprehended, and it was not clear if the two people involved in the shooting were students.

The shooting took place on the North Harris campus of the community college system. The campus was evacuated and closed for the day, officials said.

The campus is covered with pine trees and local media reported that authorities were searching a wooded area for the second shooter.

Police were stopping traffic at every intersection on the campus. Some vehicles and some pedestrians were allowed to pass but others were turned away.

Four schools in the Aldine district near Lone Star College were locked down, said Leticia Fehling, a spokeswoman for the district. Officials have closed several roads near the college and school buses were not able to enter the area, she said.

Student Amanda Vasquez said she was waiting for an English class to start in a campus building when she heard shots.

"I heard about 6 shots ... Kids started rushing down the hallway. It really happened so fast," she told CNN news.

Vasquez said people in the classroom closed the door, turned off the lights and put a table against the door.

The shooting occurred just over a month after a gunman killed 20 students and six staff at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

The Lone Star College System is the largest institution of higher education in the Houston area, according to its website. Student enrollment is 90,000 and there are six colleges in the system.

There have been three separate shootings at schools and colleges in the United States in the past two weeks.

On January 10, a student armed with a shotgun opened fire at a California high school, wounding a fellow student. A second student also received minor injures at Taft Union High School in Taft, California, about 30 miles southwest of Bakersfield.

On January 15, a student armed with a pistol opened fire at Stevens Institute of business & Arts in downtown St. Louis, shooting a school employee and then turning the gun on himself.

Also on January 15, two people were killed and a third wounded when gunfire broke out in the parking lot of a community college in eastern Kentucky. Authorities said that shooting was a result of a domestic conflict.

HMV Canada owner takes control of HMV UK in attempt to rescue troubled chain

HMV's 91-year long tenure on the British high street might not be coming to an end after all, as HMV Canada's owner has mounted a rescue attempt. The rescuer in this instance is Hilco, which previously picked up Polaroid's brand and paired it with famous insolvency specialist Lady Gaga. BBC News is reporting that Hilco scored a cut-price rate on the £176 million ($278.8 million) corporate debt and has already received cheering words from the film and music industry. After a bout of uncertainty, HMV has also said it'll once again accept gift cards in its stores.

LIVE A WEALTLHY LIFE; MY DAY AT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY ...

Get ready for Barbara Friedberg?s upcoming book,??How to Get Rich; Wealth Building Guide for the Financially Illiterate.? (sign up above for first look)

I signed up months ago to build with Habitat for Humanity with our temple?s service day. I try to give back, love to build, and was excited to finally work on a Habitat home. Come Sunday morning, and I wasn?t feeling too energetic. Was this really how I wanted to spend my Sunday? Actually, I did not want to go when the time came.

Wealth in Life

Wealth in Life

I didn?t say anything to Jr. Carina, my daughter as we drove to the site. ?I was pleased the site was only a few miles from our home and it?s always a treat to have some mom and daughter time. (Always try to look at the positives :) ) During the orientation I was fascinated to learn that Habitat builds homes for folks world wide ?and each homeowner must contribute 500 hours to the construction of their own home.

I was still thinking about all the work I could have done had I stayed home.

The funny thing was, as we started measuring, cutting, drilling, and hammering I started to enjoy myself. Luckily, the sky was crystal blue and the temperature mild. We continued carrying the lumber, measuring, and building a complicated (for me) fence. At 10:30 there was a snack break and ?sandwiches for lunch at noon.

On the drive home, Jr Carina said she had so much fun she wanted to do it again next week. In spite of staple gunning insulation to the inside of the house, high on a scary ladder, she couldn?t contain her enthusiasm. When asked what was the most fun, Jr. replied, ?Doing something important and working with the homeowner.?

HOW HABITAT TRANSLATES INTO MORE MONEY

I came home physically exhausted, more tired than I?ve been in a long time. Yet, paradoxically, I was also clear headed and motivated to do a bit of work. I put the finishing touches on the final edit of How to Get Rich; Wealth Building Guide for the Financially Illiterate and sent it off?for the last pre publication steps. I tackled some other work duties with enthusiasm. How could 5 strenuous hours of challenging outdoor work leave me so motivated to do my paying work?

Doing something totally out of your routine offers your body and mind a mini-rebirth. Your?endorphin?s, mind, body, and?imagination have a chance to bloom. ?The result is unexpected vigor.

The takeaway, schedule in the unexpected. Get out of your routine. Don?t worry about ?getting everything done,? because life is never complete. Have an adventure and savor the beauty of the free opportunities life offers: time with kids, friends, hiking, giving back, and being creative. That?s what a wealthy life is all about!

And getting a bit of work done when I came home?. well that part will translate into more money.

ACTION STEP:

Get a notebook and keep it by the computer. Use it to keep all of your personal finance goals, thoughts, activities, and plans.

1. Put the computer away.

2. Get off your butt and do something different with someone special.

Nation to honor MLK Jr. as Obama is inaugurated

(AP) ? The nation will honor civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday ? the same day as it celebrates the inauguration of the first black president to his second term.

A quirk in the calendar pushed President Barack Obama's public swearing-in in Washington onto the national holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader.

At the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington on Monday morning, several dozen people took turns taking pictures with the statue of King and reading his quotes inscribed along the wall before heading to the National Mall, about a 15-minute walk away.

Nicole Hailey, 34, had driven with her family from Monroe, N.C., a six-hour trip that they started at midnight. Hailey attended Obama's first inauguration four years ago and was carrying her Metro ticket from that day, a commemorative one with the president's face printed on it. She said her family made a point of coming to the memorial before staking out a spot for the ceremony.

"It's Martin Luther King's special day," she said. "We're just celebrating freedom."

Jon Barton, 61, and his wife Brooke Stephens, 59, of Roanoke, Va., had knocked on doors to get out the vote for Obama. On Monday they, too, were at the memorial before heading to the mall.

"When you grew up in the '60s, this means a lot," Stephens said.

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the King Center was hosting its annual commemorative service featuring the Rev. Samuel Rodriguez, who's president of the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference. The speech will mark the first time a Latino leader has served as the keynote speaker for the commemorative service on the King holiday.
