Iran sentences four to death in bank fraud trial

A Tehran court has sentenced to death four people convicted in Iran's biggest-ever banking scandal, according to the national chief prosecutor on Monday, quoted by the official news agency IRNA.

The sentences came at the end of a trial of 39 suspects that started in February. The magnitude of the scandal was estimated last year at $2.6 billion.

"According to the verdict, four people were sentenced to death," chief prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie was quoted as saying.

Mohseni Ejeie said two other of the suspects were sentenced to life in prison and the remaining received terms behind bars of up to 25 years after also being found guilty of corruption.

The identities of those convicted were not made public.

The scandal revolved around a private group that amassed trillions of rials in loans from half a dozen Iranian banks through what were said to be forged or illegally procured letters of credit to buy several state companies up for privatisation.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last year denied accusations from some critical media outlets that his office had any links to the fraud.

Sunday Inspiration ? Making A Home And Family

There is something that I look forward to each week that I have been neglecting.? Sundays!? It feels like a sacred day to slow down a little? enjoy the morning? reflect? but I haven?t been doing it (as you can see I haven?t done a Sunday Inspiration in? a month?!).

So I had decided this needed to change!? This mama needs a break from the hustle and bustle of getting the little ones ready (and myself ready and motivated) to get to the barn each morning for chores and milking.? Last night I told J to leave the baby goats with mama because I was taking the morning off.

Here I am while the coffee brews, testing out the waters of taking a morning ?off.?? You know what?? The world is still going on without me.? I am sure the goats are out on pasture, the chickens are already roaming outside, and I?m watching a wild rabbit hopping along the drive way.

What do you have planned for YOU today?

Here are some inspirational links from the week::

Have a fantabulous Sunday, everyone! <3

UK Forum will create a technology blueprint for the 50-billion ...

by admin | 30 July 2012 | Geen categorie

ARM has invited some of the UK?s leading specialist technology companies ? EnLight , Neul, Alertme and AquaMW ? to establish the UK?s first industry forum to help shape the Internet of Things.

The forum aims to combat what they describe as the ?Internet of Silos? ? an unconnected world with less value to both consumers and businesses. The forum will drive a blueprint for how technologies associated with the Internet of Things should and could work together to support the 50-billion intelligent devices due to be connected to the Internet by 2020.

This coincides with ARM CEO Warren East speaking on the importance of mobile technologies and the UK?s role in developing this market at the British Government?s Business Olympics event in London from 26th July to 3rd August. The event is timed to showcase the UK contribution to international business during the Olympics, when the world spotlight is on the UK.

In 2020 everything that can benefit from an Internet connection will have one. In a similar way to people increasingly being online, every object will have a connection. This has huge potential to help use energy and natural resources more efficiently, manage our cities, monitor health more effectively and to improve lives.? The Internet of Things represents a big opportunity to drive growth for both UK and worldwide economies. According to IMS Research*, governments will play a key role in defining the regulations that will propel shipments for M2M communications modules to more than 118 million units by 2016, especially in the automotive sector.

The forum?s founding members are all involved in advanced technology and solutions associated with the Internet of Things, including commercial infrastructure monitoring, energy-saving street lighting, home automation, energy monitoring and low power radio technology for sensors. Their aim is to work together to develop public policies and standards designed to create the right framework to help governments and others ensure that the Internet of Things works properly, across the globe, and enjoys the confidence of consumers and businesses.? The first forum will meet 24th August in the UK and will be chaired by the Gary Atkinson, who leads the Internet of Things initiative at ARM.

Best Buy offering Verizon Galaxy Nexus free on-contract

Looking to get one of the most widely-supported Android handsets (via third-party developers, anyway) on the planet? You?ll definitely want to consider Best Buy?s attractive offering.

They?ve been selling the device at Best Buy Mobile locations for free on new two-year agreements. Unfortunately the advertisement spotted suggests this deal is only available to new customer contracts and not those which are being upgraded or via a new line added to an existing account.

Since the wording could be interpreted a number of different ways we can?t say for sure either way. Regardless, we can at least be sure that new contract customers will be able to get this great device for not even a penny. Check in with your local Best Buy to see if they?re mirroring the deal. Neck and Back Pain - Health and Fitness Tips

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Travelling can be very exciting, but it can also be very stressful, especially if it is a long flight. Back or neck pain is nearly unavoidable as a result of sitting in the same (probably cramped) position for hours. Here are some tips to improve your journey.

Reserve a seat on the aisle or at the emergency exit. Either will give you a bit more space and you can get up as often as you feel. Try to book a flight at a time when there will be fewer people on board, as you will have more space in which to stretch out. Do exercises to strengthen your back and core muscles from about a month before the flight. Attend Pilates classes or lift free weights to achieve this.

Stay relaxed

Have everything packed and ready about two days before departure. Try to be as relaxed and unhurried as possible on the day of the flight. Be on time and relax with a book or magazine while waiting to board. Make sure you are well hydrated before the flight. If you know you will suffer from back pain, take muscle relaxants or pain killers an hour before the flight.

Avoid lifting anything heavy on the day of the flight. Use baggage trolleys and make sure you have packed only what you need in your bags. You should opt for two smaller bags than one big, heavy one. Try to keep your carry-on bag as light as possible; a heavy bag will strain your muscles and be uncomfortable to wrestle into and out of the overhead compartment. If possible, perform some discreet yoga or stretching exercises just before you board.

Use back support

Once you are seated, adjust your seat to be as comfortable as possible. Try to tilt it back as far as you can; your shoulders should not be pushed forward. Use a pillow or lumber roll to support your lower back and to align your spine correctly. Most flight attendants will be only too happy to supply you with pillows.

Use one behind your neck as well; a U-shaped neck pillow is the best to use. Though all passengers wish they could have comfortable divan beds to sleep on during a flight, they have to make do with what is available.

If you are short, place something under your feet to ensure that your knees form a 90? angle. This will relax your leg muscles and take some of the strain off your back muscles. Use magazines or even your bag to raise your legs.

Once the flight is under way, try to get up and walk or stretch a bit at least once every hour. Touch your toes a few times and stretch your arms above your head. You could even do some stretching exercises in your chair if space allows it.

Make sure to drink enough water during the flight. You could have some light snacks; some people feel much better if they don?t eat much during the flight, instead waiting until after the flight to have a proper meal. This can also help with jet lag.

Some seasoned travellers do not sleep the night before the flight; they take some muscle relaxants and sleep for most of the flight. Use ear plugs and an eye mask to exclude any noise or light. Listening to music using ear plugs also helps to relax you.

Upon arrival, bend your knees when lifting your luggage off the carousel to avoid hurting your back. Do a few stretching exercises as well.

The Horman-Fishers of Bentworth Hall | The Usmeum of Ordiments ...

Painting of Bentworth Hall

Bentworth Hall in the village of Bentworth, Hampshire, was built by Roger Staples Horman-Fisher when he bought this estate in 1832. A relative of his, Margaret Jane Horman-Fisher, married William Fry in Oystermouth, Swansea in 1877, and the couple went on to have children including a daughter, Elsie. Both William and Margaret suffered from ill health; he had tuberculosis, whilst she later developed multiple sclerosis (according to my mother, Mrs Fry was the first person to be diagnosed as having ?disseminated sclerosis?, but I have no idea whether or not this is true). The family had an estate on Tenerife where they lived for the benefit of Mr Fry?s health (which may explain the sketches featured in a previous post). He died there and the family moved back to England, where a house was built for the now disabled Mrs Fry in the village of Churt near Farnham in Surrey. As she could not manage stairs, the house was intended to be a bungalow, but a small second storey was added almost as an afterhought. This house was named Derwen, possibly in honour of Llyn Derw in Wales where the Horman-Fisher family had lived. Elsie Fry inherited Derwen on her mother?s death, but struggled with the cost of running it. Her close friend and cousin Mabel Zoe Watson (?Auntie? to my family) came to the rescue, buying half a share of the house and moving in with Elsie. They lived there together until Elsie?s death in the 1950s, when Derwen and its contents became Mabel?s property outright.
Amongst those contents were many items which had been passed down through generations of the Horman-Fisher family, some of which had come from Bentworth Hall (which was sold by the family in 1848). When Mabel died in 1972, my mother inherited all of her effects. Our family home was full of antiques as a result: furniture, paintings, books, and documents. Some of these are now in my possession. Some were sold by my parents to help make ends meet when they both became pensioners. Two paintings from Derwen, which were originally from Bentworth Hall,? stand out in my memory. One wall of the lounge was completely filled with a huge oil painting, about 6 feet by four foot six, of a group of aristocratic children doing archery, dogs at their feet. This was The Children of R.S. Horman-Fisher, painted at Bentworth Hall by F.J. Meyer. When Mum inherited this picture there was no wall in our house big enough to accommodate it, so it was hung on our stairs. The other memorable picture was an oil painting of Mr Horman-Fisher himself, a stern-looking gentleman in a wig holding a rolled-up copy of the Times, whose eyes followed you about the room. These paintings were sold, probably for a song, by my parents in the 1980s. However, I still have many other interesting bits and pieces from Bentworth Hall in the archives, including this small watercolour (above), and these charming paintings of members of the Eaton family.

?Margaret + Jane Eaton (Mrs Horman-Fisher) circa 1849?

Both sisters in the picture on the left married Horman-Fishers; the formidable-looking lady on the right is their grandmother, Margaret Eaton of Worcester.

A few years ago I Googled Bentworth Hall to see what I could find out, and what I found was that the Star Inn pub in the village of Bentworth hosts a blues festival every summer, Bentworth Blues. Being a lifelong fan of blues music, and recognising most of the names on the bill from the London pub circuit, I called up some old friends and we decided to go. We stayed at a lovely bed and breakfast in a converted barn nearby, but my first enquiry about accommodation had been to the Lodge at Bentworth Hall, which was advertised as a? B & B. I thought this would be a nice connection with my family?s past. It turned out that the owners no longer ran a bed and breakfast, but when I mentioned my historical connection with the Hall they kindly offered to arrange a visit for me to see the Hall and meet the current owners. I took along some of these pictures and had a wonderful experience seeing Bentworth Hall, which I had heard so much about, for the first time. The owners were charming company, serving us tea in the beautiful sitting room and showing us around the hall and grounds, which look quite different today after many alterations and additions over the years.? They seemed delighted to see these pictures, and to hear my family stories of the Horman-Fishers who had built their home.

Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community ? Retro ...

Happy weekend to everyone out there! Xanfan here with a new Retro Game Retrospective. Last night, the 2012 Summer Olympics held it?s famous opening ceremonies. (Even though the games actually started a few days ago, and already with controversy!) The Olympic Games are a big celebration to people all over the world. While I personally was always a bigger fan of the Winter Olympics, I always have to give great credit to those fantastic athletes that are the best of the best. Video games often tried to replicate that experience at home. Over the years, there have been several different games that involve the Olympics, or at least do their best to emulate them. In celebration, over the next three weeks (and thus, over the course of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games), I will be offering a different game of this style, based on these sports each Saturday afternoon, right here on Retro Game Network. This week, to start, let?s take a look at a title that is infamous for being a classic joystick buster: The Activision Decathlon!

The Activision Decathlon was released for the various Atari systems of the era (2600, 5200 & 8-bit computer series), as well as the ColecoVision, Commodore 64 and MSX computer series. Later, the game would be released for the Playstation 2 as part of the Activision Anthology. The version that most retro players remember is the Atari 2600 version, which will be the basis for this review. Typically, the decathlon is done as a part of the United States Olympic Trials, and is a competition of ten different events played over the course of 2 days. These events are Dashes (of 100, 400 and 1500 meters in length), Long Jump, Shot Put, High Jump, 110 Meter Hurdles, Discus, Pole Vault and Javelin Throw. The Activision Decathlon has all ten of them available for play on the cartridge. Some of them are a nice amount of fun, and I know at least one that everyone cringes at when the topic comes up. (But I have a way around that to share with you all later.)

Let?s take a quick look at the events on the cartridge. But first, kudos to programmer David Crane for incorporating all of the events in a real decathlon to the game. It really gives it a true authenticity! The 110 Meter Hurdles is the event where you run for 110 meters while jumping over a hurdle on the track every 10 meters. One trip on a single hurdle will certainly be enough to make you finish dead last! The Discus Throw is where you throw a rather heavy disc in the attempt to throw it the furthest distance when compared to your competitors. The Long Jump is just what it says. Run down a track and try to jump the furthest in a single leap. The Pole Vault is where the athlete uses a long, somewhat flexible pole as an aid to leap over a bar of an assigned height. The Shot Put involves the player throwing a heavy metal ball in a forward motion as far as possible. The Javelin Throw has the contestant throw a javelin (a spear) as far as possible, by running down the track to gain momentum. The High Jump is very similar to the Pole Vault, except the athlete is on their own, and has to leap over the bar without the use of any aid. Finally, the Dashes are simply runs of a certain distance, either 100, 400 or 1500 meters long. Traditionally, the 1500 meter dash is always the very last event to take place.

When you first turn on the cartridge, you see our classic character in action! He looks an awful lot like Pitfall Harry with a small color and outfit adjustment, which makes sense since they were both programmed by David Crane. He?s holding an Olympic torch while running down the track, with some famous fanfare playing in the background. Sadly, that is for the most part, all there is with music, except for those times when you score over 1000 points in a single event. But most of the time, all you will hear are sound effects as you run, jump, or throw. And it gets VERY repetitive as the events go on. Of course, this was in an era of video gaming where background music was not nearly as dominant as it is today. Very few games at the time offered background music. So that?s not really a surprise here. But the opening theme is very well done, especially on the Atari 2600 system.

Unlike other later games that took advantage of these kinds of sports, when playing with others, you have to compete only one contestant at a time. There is no simultaneous playing on this game at all. While this is perfectly fine on games such as the Shot Put or Javelin Throw, for the games of race (the Hurdles and the Dashes), it would have been nice to have at least 2 players compete at the same time instead of having to wait for one player to finish before the next player starts. For the 1500 Meter Race, this is totally not a way to go about it. (Again, more on that one later.) When playing with a group of people, it would get rather boring, rather quickly, to wait your turn while the other players finish up their rounds, when it could have very easily been done in a way where at least 2 players could play at once. At least that way you could have your typical ?Come on!? shouting matches while the games were in progress.

Like most video games of this genre, it?s basically nothing more than a bunch of ?button mashing? as it has been ever so lovingly called over the years. With the Atari 2600 version, since there was only a single button that could be mashed, the player on screen was made to move by very quickly rocking the joystick left and right as fast and as hard as you could, and then pressing the action button when a game of multiple actions had to take place. (For instance, in the high jump, you would press the button when you were ready to jump.) This was physically awkward for the player, since most of the time, the joystick was typically cupped in one hand to hold the controller and press the button, and the other hand controlled the stick movements. At the time (and even after the time) of the games release, the Atari joystick was typically not made for this kind of ?abuse? as it were, and over the years, this game alone had been accused of breaking more joysticks than any other cartridge ever released. When you think about it, it sort of makes sense. The Atari 2600 joystick was quite stiff by default, nothing like an arcade joystick that you may have been used to. So all of that frequent rocking back and forth was bound to cause malfunction. At one point, it was noted by players that it would be easier to hold the joystick between your legs while playing the game, but if you could imagine what that would look like for a moment, it wasn?t exactly a flattering angle!

One of my earliest memories of this game comes to me from when I was about 6 years old. During that time, my brother was working at a local pool supply shop. (Not billiards, swimming pools.) Every now and then, my brother would take me to work with him on Saturday mornings. Some call it bonding, some call it ?getting out of your parents hair for a few hours.? Not really sure which it was. But anyway, in the back room of the place, my brother had hooked up his ColecoVision and Expansion Module #1 for us to play during the downtime, which there was a lot of. I don?t know what I did to my brother that particular day, but he played the game up to the point of the infamous 1500 Meter Dash, and then told me to take over. Now, the 1500 Meter Dash on this game is BRUTAL! It takes an average player several minutes to complete, so imagine a 6 year old trying to finish it! I think it took me almost 2 hours to finish, and when I got to the end, I was so mad that all that happened was, the game ended. Talk about a mean trick! (And if you thought playing that event with the traditional Atari joystick was hard, try doing it with a ColecoVision controller! MUCH worse!)

Of course, this is now 2012, and we all know that other controllers are compatible with other games that were not intended, and even across various systems. (Everyone knows by now that a Genesis controller works wonders on the Atari 2600.) But for those that don?t know, for this game, there are other options. For the running events, you can use the paddle controllers instead of the traditional joystick. Just alternate pressing the two paddle buttons! But, even that one could be sort of uncomfortable to do, and like I said, it?s only able to be done with the running events since there was no actual ?action? button on them. So the best way to play? Use the Track & Field controllers! They were a set of controllers that were included with the game Track & Field, as well as sold separately at one point. (Controllers were included for other systems that the game was released on, such as the Apple II, which is the one that I own personally.) These controllers are the best because they are large, simulate an arcade style motion, and have an action button, meaning it can be used for all events. For real. Give the Atari joystick a break! (No pun intended.)

In somewhat recent pop culture, on the famous internet cartoon series ?Homestar Runner?, there was fictitious game company called Videlectrix, which made playable games that resembled actual classics. One of those games was called ?50k Racewalker?, which was a spoof of the 1500 Meter Dash of The Activision Decathlon. Most people that attempted the 1500 Meter Dash usually turned it off before the event was completed. In the spoof, once you hit 1k out of 50k, you start to walk into a pixelated darkness, and a message comes up that says that the programmers didn?t think you?d actually play the game that long, and that you have to wait until the rest gets programmed! Nice homage to the classics!

All in all, The Activision Decathlon was a very good attempt at recreating a complete decathlon experience in your home. (If you are playing with the original joysticks, you will even feel like you just ran a marathon with all of that motion on the arm!) All of the events are there, the beginning fanfare is very well sounding, it?s just that the controls are limited and awkward, which hinders the actual game play. I think that a special controller should have been included, just like on Track & Field. While this game isn?t the best of the genre, it most certainly is not the worst by far. If nothing else, it is a flat out Atari classic for it?s good points as well as the bad ones. It?s also relatively very easy to pick up a copy at a local trade store, or online. But, just don?t expect a lot of replay value, and when you get to the 1500 meter dash, trust me. If you don?t have one of the optional controllers I mentioned, just pass it. Seriously. Your joystick and your arm will thank you! (And don?t forget to collect your metals! Activision was famous for offering patches for high scores, and this was no exception. Based on the points you earned, you could win a bronze, silver, or gold patch! Very nice touch, Activision.)

Md. man arrested in workplace shooting plot

(AP) ? Police in Maryland have arrested suspect who referred to himself as "a joker" and threatened to shoot up his workplace, investigators said Friday.

An official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that Neil Prescott of Crofton, Md., phoned in the threat to software and mailroom supplier Pitney Bowes near Washington, D.C. Investigators say a search of Prescott's home turned up more than 20 guns, including assault rifles and handguns, and more than 400 rounds of ammunition.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is unfolding.

Though the suspect referred to himself as "a joker" when he called in the threat, the official said there is no other known connection to a deadly shooting last week at a Colorado movie theater during the latest Batman movie.

Investigators believe Prescott, who was arrested Thursday night, had lost his job with the company and was disgruntled. They say he called in the threat earlier this week.

Pitney Bowes spokeswoman Carol Wallace said in an emailed statement that Prescott was an employee of a subcontractor to the company and had not been on any Pitney Bowes property in more than four months.

Prescott was being held Friday at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, where he was undergoing a psychological evaluation. Crofton is located between D.C. and Annapolis, Md.

DeVito talks 'Twins' sequel, shows off 'troll foot'

By Ree Hines

Good news, film fans. Actor Danny DeVito could soon be headed back to the big screen alongside former "Twins" co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger for a sequel to their '80s hit. Devito, who's currently in London for his final performances in the Neil Simon play "The Sunshine Boys," revealed the details on TODAY -- after a round of footsies.

Yes, before the highly-anticipated film talk, the actor wanted to take care of some important barefoot business. Fans who follow DeVito on Twitter are already familiar with his project, #trollfoot, wherein the star strips off a shoe and sock and photographs his right foot (the trollish one, as far as he's concerned) in the middle of whatever action he finds himself in. On Thursday morning, the action was TODAY-related.

As DeVito prepared for the snapshot, Natalie Morales compared his habit to "traveling gnome" photos, a la "Amelie" or those Travelocity ads, but he was quick to correct her.

"It's not a gnome -- it's a foot!" he insisted. "C'mon! ... By the way, there are a lot of troll foot fans. Don't abuse the troll foot."

Savannah Guthrie then offered up her not-at-all trollish foot to co-star in the picture, and after some wrangling that left DeVito on the ground, struggling for the perfect shot, it was a done deal. Expect the result to appear on Twitter any moment now.

With that important bit of foot fun behind him, DeVito moved on to movie news, as in "Triplets" -- the proposed title for that "Twins" follow up.

"Yes, yes!" he said when asked if it was still a go. "The thing about a movie is, you know, you've got the two guys -- you've got Arnold and I. We have the desire to do it. What we need is the screenplay. ... We want to find a really great story."

And one more co-star. Previous reports have put Eddie Murphy in the role of the other brother.

Barbara Rose Brooker has written an intimate novel that may mostly occur to people associated with a age. The interesting thing is the very fact that her lovers are inside their 70s. They contain the usual struggles Cialis with all the dynamics of relationships, but they bring a great deal more baggage using their company relationships along with health concerns and end of life issues. The tendency in the public is always to want to view people inside their 70s as beyond romance and relationship issues. As Baby Boomers age inside their 60s, more plus more in the public are learning to see elderly people the means by which Barbara Rose Brooker portrays them.

The protagonists are Anny and Marv. Each is often a veteran internet dater and so they meet through JDate. Anny violates all the rules of internet dating safety by meeting him with a bar after which engaging in his car and gonna his place for the first date. He begins Cialis kissing her and, not surprisingly, asks for sex right off of the bat. She negotiates this mine field and comes out safely, reaching the conclusion that Marv Cialis is not for her.

"Obviously, Marv's not relationship material. He's into image, money - Cialis to never mention he's still in love along with his ex-wife. He's a cliche, living on his past glamour. Anyway, I prefer professorial types. And haven't I'd enough with emotionally unavailable men? Relationships that go nowhere? Am I once more attracted to some man I do not like?" (p. 7)

We hear many times that Marv is emotionally unavailable. When he's after sex, he could be charming and attentive. After sex, there's no emotional warmth left as they wants the woman to hurry away and be certain to look at everything she brought with her. Actually is well liked lies about his involvement along with other women, denying he is entangled along with his ex-wife although her watch is found in his bed and denying he is still active on JDate despite the actual fact that Anny can go on JDate and tell that they is immediately searching for other women right after they had sex together.

Needless to say, Anny features a torrid affair with Marv and experiences emotional conflict the years these are together. She writes a column and begins to make use of Marv as material. She writes "a series of columns about an emotionally unavailable, shallow seventy-five-year-old man who cannot face age Cialis and is also always around the prowl to get a young, gorgeous,, and ideal woman, that will cause him to feel young and powerful." (p. 13) Her desire to end the connection with Marv conflicts with your ex wish to make use of him for material, for her column becomes an excellent success because of her series on Marv and she or he needs him for more material.

15 Early Signs Of Cancer - Health - Nairaland

15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:39pm On Jul 25Yesterday, Ghana's President John Atta Mills succumbed to Cancer of the throat. Our own former President Umaru Yar'adua, though infected by a cocktail of diseases, also had lung cancer among the potpourri of ailments that felled him 2 years ago. From Tayo Aderinokun (ex-CEO, GTB) to Bayo Ligali (ex-CEO, Zain) to Ibrahim Jega (ex-ED, UBA) to Alaire Alaibe, the C-disease has been ravaging the land. We will be wallowing in deceit if we think only the VIPs play host to the Big-C. Truth is many common men and women also die on daily basis from Cancer affliction.

Early detection, medical experts have emphasized, can go a long way in minimizing, if not checking outright, cancer infection. I find the article below illuminating.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:40pm On Jul 25Spotting the warning signs of cancer early is often crucial to treating the disease effectively. While that means scheduling regular checkups with your doctor and making sure you?re getting the screening tests you need when you need them, it?s just as important to be watching for any subtle changes to how you?re feeling. After all, no one knows your body better than you ? so it?s crucial that you pay attention to and follow up on anything that seems out of the ordinary. Here are 15 possible warning signs of cancer that every woman should watch for.

1, Unexplained Weight Loss
Realizing that you suddenly fit into your skinny jeans may seem like a pleasant surprise ? but the reality is that unexplained weight loss (or weight gain, for that matter) is usually a red flag. If you've lost 10 pounds or more in less than a month (without changing your diet or exercise routine), you should see your doctor.
Unexplained weight loss can be an early sign of pancreatic, stomach, esophageal or lung cancer (as well as other health problems, like an overactive thyroid, diabetes, depression or liver disease).

2, Changes to Your bosoms
Most women recognize a lump in their bosom as something that should be checked out by a doctor. But there are other changes to your bosoms that could also signal cancer. If you notice any of the following, let your doctor know:
? redness or thickening of skin around the bosom
? cellulite-like dimples or a red or purplish discoloration in the skin
? your bosoms feel hot, swollen or irritated
In addition, if you notice an unusual unmentionable discharge, or if you notice changes to you unmentionable (like suddenly appearing flattened, inverted or turned sideways), report the changes to a doctor.

3, Bleeding Between Periods
Every woman's period is different, and for some women, spotting is common. But if you're typically regular and start bleeding between periods, or if you bleed after reaching menopause, let your doctor know. Nine in 10 women with endometrial cancer report irregular bleeding as an early sign. Also, some women mistake bleeding from their gastrointestinal tract as spotting or as their period. GI tract bleeding can be an early sign of colorectal cancer.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:41pm On Jul 254, Bloating
It's normal to feel bloated once in awhile, especially after a big meal or during your period. But if that bloated feeling persists for more than a couple of weeks or continues to get worse, talk to your doctor. Also let your doctor know if you experience bloating in conjunction with feeling unusually full, a change to your bowel or bladder habits, or low back or pelvic pain. Those are often the early symptoms of ovarian cancer.

5, Skin Changes
Most women know that a yearly skin check to spot any new moles (or changes to existing moles) is the best way to spot skin cancer while it's easily treatable. But other skin changes can also signal skin cancer. Tell your doctor if you notice any waxy lumps, scaly skin patches, or spot a sore or rash that doesn't heal.
Also note if you have any excessive bruising ? especially on the fingers and hands ? or if you notice any skin bleeding that seems unusually hard to stop (both are an early sign of leukemia). If you've monitored any skin abnormalities for more than a few weeks and have noticed no improvement, consult your doctor.

6, Constant Fatigue
Balancing work or school, family obligations and hitting the gym ? all while trying to maintain some semblance of a social life ? can make you feel like you?re always on the go. It?s completely normal for most women to feel tired and run down from time to time. But if your fatigue doesn't let up after getting rest, head to your doctor. Prolonged fatigue is a sign of many different types of cancers, or may signal another health problem, like a thyroid condition or iron imbalance.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:41pm On Jul 257, Difficulty Swallowing
Having problems swallowing could be an early symptom of esophageal, throat, lung or thyroid cancer. If you have pressure in your throat or feel like something is stuck in your windpipe, see your doctor.

8, A Chronic Cough
Coughs are most often caused by allergies or infections. And while they may linger as you recover from the flu or a cold, having a cough that doesn't go away or that is accompanied by chest pain is a symptom of many types of cancer, including lung cancer. If you have a cough that lasts more than 3 to 4 weeks, or if your cough goes away and then reappears consistently, make an appointment with your doctor.

9, Feeling Unusually Full
Constantly feeling full despite having eaten little, or experiencing a prolonged loss of appetite could be a tip-off to ovarian cancer (as well as other, less serious health problems like GERD or IBS). If the feelings persist over a period of a few weeks, or if they're accompanied by vomiting, bloating, a fever or weight loss or weight gain, let your doctor know.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:42pm On Jul 2510, Swollen Lymph Nodes
Changes in your lymphatic system are most often due to an infection ? but in some cases, swollen, firm lymph nodes in the armpit, groin, or neck could be a sign of danger. If the swelling continues for more than a month, or the swollen glands seem to be getting bigger, see your doctor.

11, Shortness of Breath
If you frequently have difficulty breathing, especially when you?re not doing anything strenuous, it could signal a more serious health problem, including lung or thyroid cancer. You may also be suffering from bronchitis, asthma, pneumonia, pulmonary embolism or other heart or lung problems ? all of which require prompt medical attention.

12, Frequent Fevers
Often times, a fever is a welcome sign ? it signals that your body is fighting off an infection. But if you have a persistent fever that isn?t explained by an infection, it may signal a blood cancer like leukemia or lymphoma. A fever that lasts more than four days warrants a call to your doctor.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by Jarus(m): 1:43pm On Jul 2513, Changes to Nails
Your nails suffer a lot of normal wear and tear every day, and it isn?t unusual for them to suffer bangs that can leave white spots or bruising. Plus, everyone?s nails look different ? some people naturally have weaker, peeling or otherwise less-than-perfect nails ? and that?s also normal. However, there are instances where unexplained nail changes can point to more serious problems. Dark streaks or spots under your nails could indicate skin cancer, while having pale nails could mean liver cancer.

14, Blood in Your Urine or Stool
Blood in your stool can be caused by several different medical conditions, including hemorrhoids, BehindBased fissures or cracks, inflammation of the colon or peptic ulcers. However, it?s also a sign of colorectal cancer.
Blood in your urine can signal bladder or kidney infections or stones, an enlarged prostate; it may also be the result of certain medications, or over-vigorous exercise. But in some cases, blood in the urine can indicate bowel or kidney cancer. If you see blood in your urine or stool, it?s important to let your doctor know, so that he or she can pinpoint the cause.

15, Persistent Pain
We all have days where we feel achy or sore. But chronic, persistent pain isn?t something you should write off as a side effect of aging or over-exercising. Back pain, pelvic or abdominal pain and even what seems like a run-of-the mill stomachache or indigestion can signal many different types of cancer, from liver, pancreatic and bosom to ovarian, endometrial and colorectal. If you can?t find a plausible cause for the pain you?re feeling, and if it continues to dog you, talk to a doctor.

Re: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by ACM10: 2:45pm On Jul 25There is no specific early sign of cancer. Most of the symptoms and signs you mentioned are also associated with late-stage malignancy. Cancer can occur in any body tissue, and each one presents with unique symptoms. Some of the symptoms that you mentioned can occur in terminal stage of cancer.

BTW, SIGNS and SYMPTOMS connotes different meaning.
SIGN: an indication of a particular disorder that is observed by a physician but is not apparent to the patient.
SYMPTOM: an indication of a disease or disorder noticed by the patient himself.
In essence, a layman can never notice any sign, but a physician can pick up the signs of a particular disorder from a patient.

Since there are no specific early symptom of cancer, there are factors that warns a patient of the probability of developing of cancer. Those factors are collectively called Risk Factors. Some of them are, positive family history, cigarette smoking, intake of oral contraceptive pill, exposure to radiation, risky intimate behaviour, etc

It is advised that people should subject themselves to thorough medical examinations every 2yrs after the age of 40

Lollyij: What of postrate cancer, someone shld enlighten me on it

Nice question! This is a form of cancer that grabs my interest immediately it's mentioned. I'm so much interested in it because it runs in my family. My great-grandfather suffered it. My grandfather got his prostate removed in 1990. Two of my granny's brothers has already done a prostate removal surgery called called prostatectomy. It reoccured in one of them and he has since succumbed to it.

Prostate is only found in men. It functions to nourish the sperm. It is the only organ that continues to grow throughout life. Its diseases can be prostatitis, benign prostatic hypertrophy, prostate cancer, etc. Prostate cancer is a disease of the elderly. It occurs in mostly people that are 50 and above. Though it might occur much earlier. Its symptom can vary. But some of the important ones are hematuria, waist pain, constipation, urinary incontinence, weight loss or even dysuria, urgency, terminal dribbling, frequency, weak stream, etc. Its symptom is related to its degree of spread.
It can be detected early, and when this is done, surgeons aims for a cure. Some investigative modalities like Prostate Specific Antigen(PSA) can predict the transformation in the prostate. The result of the PSA will guide the surgeon on whether to perform biopsy. The treatment is often called radical prostatectomy. Again the choice of the surgery is determined by the degree of spread of the cancer.
In late stage presentation, surgeons aims at palliation. This involves the removal of the influences that aids the growth and the spread of the cancer. Surgeons often remove the testis with the administration of drugs that blocks the androgen production in the body. They call it total androgen blocade. The aim at this stage is to alleviate the patients
symptoms and prolong his life.

Prostate cancer is the enlargement of the prostate - a walnut-size organ in every male. Men of black origin are of higher risk and should start prostate exams from about age 40. Symptoms usually don't present early, and when u start feeling symptomatic, chances are that it might have spread. If sm1 has had it in ur lineage, u should be more proactive. Symptoms include: painful urination, delay in passing urine, frequent urination... H/ever, having these doesn't necessarily mean u have prostate cancerRe: 15 Early Signs Of Cancer by ibsmooth: 4:34pm On Jul 25

The thing is it's not just risky se.xual behaviour, you can still get hpv just by sleeping with one person.----(Mistaken)Most sexu.ally active people will get it at one point in their lifetime.

For the contraceptive pill, it says you are at a higher risk of getting cancer(I think cervical cancer) using it for more than 5years but it also says it reduces your chance of getting cancer(I think bosom cancer).

I don't know whether they have the hpv vaccination in Nigeria.

Sorry for your loss. I feel ur pain bro deeply
I lost my younger brother (Graduate) aged 24 on May 2, 2012 to Leukaemia (cancer that affects the blood cells). The strange thing was that he never manifested any of the symptons listed except for his loss of weight, bleedin gums (which we attributed to his regular visit to his Dentist). But aside from these, he looked ok.
The only treatment is God's factor and early diagnosis cos if its too late you are a dead man walking.

US launches first commercial tidal power project this summer, Maine to reap moon's gravitational benefits

Solar may be the green energy source that's been hogging the headlines lately, but there are other fossil-fuel free ways that can help meet society's electrical needs. One of these is tidal power, and the US is set to start harnessing the ocean's electricity-generating potential this summer with the TidGen Cobscook Bay project -- the first such commercial project in the States. Located just off the coast of Eastport, Maine, turbines will be placed in 50-100 feet deep water to take advantage of the 100 billion tons of water that flow in and out of Cobscook Bay each day. When the project goes live, it'll feed into the public power grid and generate enough juice to power between 75 and 100 homes, and the plan is to eventually install enough turbines to generate 3MW of power -- which should cover the needs of over 1,000 homes and businesses. There's more info, plus plenty of political self-congratulation in the source below.

Marine microorganisms hold the key to life on Earth

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? Few people realize that all life on earth evolved from microorganisms in the sea. Microorganisms, or microbes, are those organisms too small to be observed by the human eye and they are everywhere, often in huge numbers. Just one litre of coastal seawater contains up to a billion microbes including thousands of different types.

Scientists have long recognized the importance of microbes, which form the basis of all food webs and drive the complex biogeochemical cycles which recycle key elements such as carbon and nitrogen. Given that the oceans account for more than 90% of Earth's biosphere -- that portion of Earth able to support life -- it is hardly surprising that marine microorganisms account for a large part of the total biomass of life on Earth. They also produce more than half of the entire global oxygen supply and, in doing so, use up a large proportion of human-generated CO2, a greenhouse gas that is accelerating global warming.

The new Marine Board position paper, Marine Microbial Diversity and its role in Ecosystem Functioning and Environmental Change, takes a look at some of the key scientific and societal questions that will drive the European research agenda in the coming years.

Frank Oliver Gl?ckner of the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology & Jacobs University Bremen in Germany, and Chair of the Marine Board expert working group which produced the paper, explains why a roadmap for future research in this area was urgently needed: "we have known for some time that marine microorganisms are a crucial component of the Earth's life-support system. Yet despite their obvious importance, very little is known about them, including how many different types are present in the oceans, what the role of each of them is and even how to define a microbial species."

The Marine Board paper describes how Europe has traditionally played a leading role in marine microbial research and examines how the field is advancing rapidly, driven by technological and scientific developments and the problems of global change, population growth and over-exploitation of marine resources. To maintain Europe's competitiveness in this important area of research, the paper calls for the establishment of a coordinated, pan-European research programme focused on marine microbiology, but cautions that funds for research alone will not be sufficient.

To support future research, the paper also calls for the establishment of a European repository for cultivated microbial collections and a centre for marine data management. "The implementation of omics technologies will generate unprecedented amounts of data," says Kostas Nittis, Chair of the Marine Board, "this paper sends the important message that a coordinated European data centre will be essential to ensure that we are able to optimize the use of this data for the benefit of society."

The Coffee Culture In The Country | food and drink

It wasn?t until I moved into the US that I started drinking flavored coffee regularly and became what they contact the Netherlands a ?koffieleut?, which explicates literally into ?coffee socialite. ? Even so the average European drinks more coffee each and every year than the average American, the cultural importance as well as its effects on the average European has a tendency to me smaller than that on the majority of American. After all, coffee is a cultural obsession in the nation.

Coffee in the US is a good subculture that massively floated to the surface of the consumer?s society. Starbucks is more compared with coffee, it?s more than just another brand that can be purchased, it is a social-political statement, a way of perceiving how you aspire to live, in other words it may be a culture. Starbucks is the alternative to Coca-Cola and much more than just coffee: it?s chocolate, ice-cream, frappuccino, holiday mugs with exotic prints, cups together with live music, CD?s, discounts on exhibitions and support for volunteer work.

In memoriam: 'Ride, Sally, Ride'

NBC News' Rehema Ellis reports on Sally Ride's death, and her life.

By Alan Boyle

If Sally Ride could have flown in space without the hubbub over being the first American woman to do so, she'd have done it in a heartbeat. Celebrity wasn't her thing. The final frontier was.

That comes through loud and clear in Ride's own reminiscences of her selection as NASA's first female space traveler. She recalled getting a "little chat" from Chris Kraft, the head of NASA's Johnson Space Center, just to make sure "I knew what I was getting into before I agreed to be on the crew."

"But I was so dazzled just by the opportunity to be on the crew and go into space that I really don't remember very much of what he said," she said.

Ride had to deal with the full force of the media hoopla surrounding her history-making spaceflight in 1983. One questioner asked whether she'd wear a bra in space. "There is no sag in zero-G," she famously answered. (By some accounts, NASA research since then has led to the development of better sports bras.)

Eventually, Ride found it easier to avoid the celebrity spotlight. "I'm the sort of person who likes to be able to just walk into the supermarket and not be recognized," she told The Associated Press in 2003. "I can do that most of the time now. A lot of people recognize the name. Very few recognize my face. That's very good."

Now that Ride has passed away at the age of 61, after battling pancreatic cancer for 17 months, there's be another posthumous surge of celebrity. Once again, there'll be chatter about Ride's?illness, which she reportedly asked NASA not to publicize, as well as her?personal relationships. But for now, the focus should be squarely on her contribution to?space exploration ? as the woman who broke the space barrier, who helped investigate two of NASA's toughest tragedies, who helped shape America's space vision, and who fostered the next generation of explorers through such ventures as Sally Ride Science, EarthKAM and MoonKAM. That's the legacy that comes through loud and clear in the tributes from the White House and NASA, as well as the tributes from these other luminaries:

Eileen Collins, NASA's first woman shuttle commander:
"I am surprised and saddened by the news of Sally Ride?s passing.? She was such a wonderful role model and source of inspiration to me.? People around the world still recognize her name as the first American woman in space, and she took that title seriously even after departing NASA.? She mentored me several times during my astronaut career, leaving me with many cherished memories.? She never sought media attention for herself, but rather focused on doing her normally outstanding job. ?Her Sally Ride Science programs have reached thousands of middle-school girls, giving them the confidence to stay focused on math and science, even when the mass media message was otherwise.? She also played a notable role in both the Challenger and Columbia accident investigations.? Sally left us too soon. Godspeed, Sally, you will be greatly missed."

Mitt Romney, Republican presidential candidate; former Massachusetts governor:
"Today, America lost one of its greatest pioneers. The first American woman in space, Sally Ride inspired millions of Americans with her determination to break the mold of her time. She was a profile in courage, and while she will be missed, her accomplishments will never be forgotten."

Bill Nye (the Science Guy), executive director, Planetary Society:
"Sally Ride changed the world. We are very sorry to hear of her recent death after a nearly two-year battle with cancer. Dr. Ride was an excellent astronaut, a remarkable educator, and a longtime Planetary Society friend and adviser. Her particular passion was to get girls excited about science. She did just that. Her?Sally Ride Science programs, which include camps, academies, educator institutes and festivals, will carry her legacy into the future. I encourage everyone to take a moment over the next few days and honor Sally Ride by giving a young person a reminder that she or he could pursue a career in science and change the world just as Sally did. She will be missed."

Nancy Conrad, founder and chairman of the Conrad Foundation; widow of Apollo moonwalker Pete Conrad:
"The Conrad Foundation and our students and partners are saddened to hear of Sally Ride?s untimely death. Sally was a great physicist, astronaut, educator and American hero. She dedicated her life to bringing the world of science to girls with her Sally Ride Science Academy and Camps. She was a wonderful role model for young women and girls and will be sadly missed. We salute her contribution to our nation and to our future."

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., chairman of the Senate Science and Space Subcommittee:
"Sally Ride was one of the great pioneers as the first American woman in space. The whole nation was with her when she launched, ?lifting her up on a chorus of 'Ride, Sally, Ride.'"

U.S. Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Texas, chairman, House Science, Space and Technology Committee:
"I am very saddened by the news that my friend Sally Ride, the first American female astronaut to fly in space, has passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer.? Sally was an inspiration to all, and her historic flight into space showed aspiring young women that they too could be successful in fields such as physics and engineering that had historically been dominated by men. Generations to come will reflect on Sally as an individual who broke barriers, demonstrated brave leadership, and taught the world to think a little differently.? Sally?s legacy will be reflected in all of the young girls she inspired to pursue careers in science and engineering."

Neil deGrasse Tyson, director, Hayden Planetarium: "Space programs create unique portfolios of heroes ??in life and in death. US Shuttle astronaut Sally Ride 1951-2012, RIP."

Doug King, president and CEO, Museum of Flight:
"We are saddened by the news of Sally Ride?s death and send our deepest condolences to her family.? Many of us clearly remember in 1983, watching her board the space shuttle Challenger as she literally blazed a trail as the first woman in space.? She touched all of our lives and in particular was an incredible role model for young women everywhere, demonstrating that a career as an astronaut could be reality.? We have a great deal of respect for her accomplishments as an astronaut and an educator and her lifelong dedication to STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math).? She will be missed."

Lon Rains, chairman, Coalition for Space Exploration:
"Today, the Coalition for Space Exploration is saddened to say goodbye to our dear friend and colleague Sally Ride ??physicist, astronaut, educator and American hero.? After her trailblazing career in space, Sally dedicated her life to the mission of opening the world of science to girls, with the Sally Ride Science Academy and Camps.?She was a role model, a mentor and one of our most effective champions for STEM education.?Our sorrow in her passing is only exceeded by our deep respect and gratitude for her contributions to our nation and our future."

Elliot Pulham, CEO, Space Foundation:
"The space community, teachers and students around the world have lost a great friend and role model. Sally was more than a trailblazing astronaut and brilliant scientist. She was deeply concerned about the state of education in the United States, and worked tirelessly to reach students, especially at-risk young women, with programs filled with hope and inspiration ? to enable our next generation of explorers. Whether on board a space shuttle, inside a corporate board room, or with students at one of her Sally Ride Science events, she was a motivational and inspiring leader. She was a friend to all explorers, and she will be deeply missed."

Scott Parazynski, chairman, Challenger Center for Space Science Education:
"We are deeply saddened to hear of Sally Ride's passing. Her passion brought STEM education to the forefront and for that we will be forever grateful. She will continue to be a great source of inspiration for students around the globe. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and loved ones."
