Opportunity Seeker or? ? - Certified Fitness Nursing

Are you an Opportunity Seeker or a Strategic Entrepreneur?

?I first heard this question from Alex Mandossian, an information marketer, who?s brilliant in how he makes complex things so simple.

Chances are you are the former. ?I suppose, we all are opportunity seekers at some point.

What opportunity are you seeking?

  • Are you looking for a fitness opportunity in Nursing?
  • Are you looking for a nursing opportunity in Fitness?
  • Are you looking to create your own opportunity?

Well good luck in your search.
In my search, over 20 years, for either? I found that they don?t exist. ?

Well I did teach exercise for a health resources department, in a hospital system, as a nurse, at a nurses? rate. But it was short-lived. ?Someone realized that fitness trainers could do it for half my pay. ?I then continued to give lectures and do public health screenings. ?(It was still a decent job)?

How about the first one:

Well, remember in nursing school when everything was crammed into such a strategic time allotment. ?The most that we were taught about exercise was an ?activity deficit?, how loss of mobility is a key factor in your patients going down hill, R.O.M., body mechanics and maybe the government recommendations. ?Any more studying than that, was probably done on your own. ?Nursing just doesn?t have the space or place for teaching nurses how to teach patients how to exercise. Besides in a clinical setting, there are physical therapists who are great at knowing the ?ins and outs? of exercise. Doctors would recommend patients to them. But then again, patients who are able to actually exercise, besides cardiac rehab, wouldn?t be in the hospital (insurance wouldn?t cover this). So for now anyway, there is no opportunity for you to work as a nurse/fitness trainer in Nursing (clinical setting). ??

How about the second one:

How about working in a gym or a club? ?Sure you can be a nurse who, actually does ?nurse? skills, like take blood pressure and do other screenings in a club or a gym? for $12.00 an hour. ?To be a nurse who specializes in fitness at a gym or club (in fitness) is what many of you may do now. ?You may get paid pretty well. Are your clients coming to you because you?re a nurse with a specialty in fitness or because your a good exercise instructor? ?There are a few of you who specifically have clients who come to see you because you are a nurse? fantastic. ?Are you getting paid for that? ?Or are you getting paid the same as the exercise instructor who has a weekend certification? ?Is there a distinction in your service? Does anybody really care???Are people coming to the class, gym or club to see a nurse?

How about the third one:

This is the one that I have decided to go with. ?An opportunity is what you make it, right? ?I think it?s how you see it. ?Many of you may feel that creating your own opportunity is NOT an opportunity at all. ?It?s a hassle. ?A risk. ?A territory that hasn?t been explored yet and ?let someone else explore it first; then I?ll try it? maybe?. ?What about making money and supporting yourself? ?There?s no guarantee that you will make any money creating your own opportunity. ?I know. ?I hear your concerns. ?But I still feel that someone has to try. ?That someone? be me! ?I realize that I have to create more social proof. ?And it?s what I intend to do!

I?m not alone in my quest for creating social proof and my own opportunity as a Fitness Nurse Consultant? and Certified Fitness Nurse? Coach (which is what I call myself, without anyone?s permission). There are a few courageous nurses who are making their own opportunity too. ?We are trying to become Strategic Entrepreneurs; not just Opportunity Seekers any longer. ?We?re not spending most of our time looking for an established opportunity that doesn?t exist in the ?job market? or doing one thing one time or getting more initials to put behind our name thinking that?s the problem (when it isn?t) or giving an exercise class and then say, ?see you next week? ?maybe you won?t see them next week. ?There?s NO long term commitment there. ?We?re creating our own opportunity strategically.

What we need to do as a Strategic Entrepreneur:

  1. Decide why we want to combine our nursing skills with our fitness training and whom best we can help by doing this and where they are. Their ?hubs?.
  2. Decide what we are best at when delivering information/instruction to others. ?Do we like to talk, to write, to entertain (have company over), go to social events, to be on the computer (social media), etc.? ?This will help us decide the way we will market our services, without dread.?
  3. We decide what we want our ideal client to do when they come into contact with us personally, visit our blog, face book page, read an article, etc. ?This usually is not to directly ?buy? something from us. ?But to get a ?FREE? publication, tips, recording, whatever interests them. ?We know that we need to build relationships, to build trust and very importantly to build an email list of interested people, who we keep in contact with at least 2X a month. ?Eventually, we also offer teleseminars and explore new ways of getting ?out there?, like on Google+ (It?s free). ?President Obama just had a ?Fireside Chat? on Google+ last week. ?It?s catching on.
  4. We become a celebrity in ?our own backyard? as the only Fitness Nurse Consultant? (FNC) or Certified Fitness Nurse? Coach (CFNC) in our local area. ?Remember to become a ?Trusted Authority? in your local area, all you need is a core competence that you can improve someone?s health and solve their problem and more importantly, the confidence to carry out that improvement and to start solving their problem.
And on the internet we link all of our social media to work together and organize a 3-month calendar of specific topics and sub-topics that our ideal clients want and will love. ?This also frees up our time and we?re not scatter-brain about what to write about and we?re not chasing clients or hoping they?ll show up.
  • I suggest that you start with a ?study? that you are doing. ?When I first started I offered a study on the effects of working out with a puppy around. It turned out that many of the participants came and brought their child or grandchild who was occupied with PangPang, my pug, a puppy at this time, while they (my clients) worked out. ? ?They didn?t come before because they didn?t want the child to ?just sit there? and watch them. ?So, having the puppy there increased their exercise adherence. ?Pretty cool, huh? ?Clients still ask about PangPang today. ?
  • Or you could offer a tasting of a type of food that you like to use in your program, and invite 5-6 people over. ?Offer stuff that people would leave their house for. ?Like free, delicious food. ?Send invitations, well in advance, with pictures of what you will serve and the point of the ?get together?. ?Like I said earlier, what do you want the ?get-together? to accomplish? ?Always have ?the end result? in mind. ?Just a side note? just information, regardless how good it is, is usually not good enough to get people to leave their house. ?Oh, you can also go to someone else?s house or be more formal and rent a small, cheap place with a kitchen, if having food (highly recommended), like a firehouse hall.
  • I?ve just decided to start a meet-up in my local area more focused on my private FNC practice. The local fitness nurse meet-up, that I just canceled, never worked because there aren?t any local fitness nurses in my area who would show up. ?(Most nurses who found the meet-up in a Google search, were looking for an opportunity. ?Some might have been very interested, but they lived 2,000 miles away. ?Meet-ups are for just that? meeting up.)?It?s best to grow my FNC practice and introduce one of the 4 non-negotiables I teach as a CFNC, it will also be the title of the meet-up. ?One of my clients is helping me with it. ?I?m so excited to get it going. ?I?ll announce it soon. ?If you live near the Jersey Shore, Asbury Park area, I hope you will join the meet-up! ?This way, not only will people who sign up want to try one of my delicious meals you can have on my plan, I introduce them to the philosophy behind eating this way. ? They can also share their concerns about previous diets and taking medications. ?I, of course, have and create conversations about all the health benefits, how easy it is and saves them money. ?Over time relationships develop and referrals come easier. ?No selling at the meet-up.
  • ??????????????????????????-
To be transparent with you, Kevin Ross, RN, BSN and I are starting next week with our 6-month VIP Mentorship for Fitness Nurse Consulting. ?We have decided to work with one nurse at a time. After all, each of you are different with different goal, gifts and dreams. ?The application and admission is ongoing. ?(The actual mentorship is really just over 4 months we put in breaks throughout the program). ?We want to build relationships with the nurses we assist. ?We are committed to them and they are committed to us and to becoming a strategic entrepreneur (lasting), not an opportunity seeker (fleeting). ?If you are interested in more information on our 6-month VIP Mentorship just go to www.fitnessnurseconsulting.com. ?You can also watch a recorded webinar there, that is required, before you fill out and send in the application.
  • I?ll save you some effort if you are going there, looking for a price. ?You get the price when you speak to me personally, after you listen to the recorded webinar and send in your application. ?This done for a reason. ?If you are an ideal client for us, and there?s a fit, we will work with you. ?If you are just shopping price, then there are many other coaching programs out there for you to choose price over. ?

The nurses who follow the instructions, make the effort and are sincere in doing what only a few courageous nurses are doing today, will understand that this is very much a part of what you need to become a strategic entrepreneur? create systems, a plan, delayed gratification. ?This skill is something you also are taught when it comes to pricing for your own services at a fee that you deserve and will get from your ideal clients too.

Misunderstanding coal in Europe

Every ton of emissions from American coal burned in Europe means that a ton won?t be burned in a country like China ? or even the United States ? where emissions are uncapped, Holland writes.

By Andrew Holland,?Guest blogger / February 16, 2013

Steam and smoke rise from a coal power station in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. Barring the unlikely decision to keep the coal in the ground, Holland writes, the best outcome for environmentalists is to export American coal to Germany, where emissions are capped.

Europe?s Emissions Cap

Recently, there have been a spate of articles in the press saying that Europe?s increasing imports of coal undermines ?their leadership on climate and their ?green? credentials.

This shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the European?Emissions Trading Scheme?(ETS) in particular, and the nature of a market-based emissions cap (AKA cap-and-trade) system in general.

Granted, the ETS is an imperfect cap because it only covers about 45% of total emissions in the EU ? most notably it does not include emissions from home heating or automobile transportation. Importantly, though, it does cover major industrial emitters and utility-scale electricity production, which are the major users of coal.?(Read More:?Global Carbon Dioxide Emissions ? Facts and Figures)

However, the articles continually say things like this, in Friday?s?Washington Post:??Green-friendly Europe has a dirty secret: It is burning a lot more coal.??The schadenfreude exhibited in these articles is unrelated to Europe?s actual record on climate policy.

The truth is that Europe is well below their targeted emissions levels, set both in UN negotiations and in their own Brussels-based policies. They are on their way to meeting their 2020 goals of reducing emissions by 20% below 1990 levels. Partially, they are meeting these goals because reduced economic growth has resulted in reduced emissions. But ? in a parallel universe in which the euro crisis never happened and the EU had enjoyed a five year run of strong economic growth, the ETS would have ensured that they would still meet their target. That is because, for the 45% of the emissions covered by the ETS, it would be illegal to emit at a rate higher than the cap.?

CPPIB 'cautious' amid competition in real estate, debt capital ...

Mark Wiseman, the chief executive of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, which invests on behalf of Canadian workers and retirees, says he won?t be lured into competition for hot real estate assets that could drive down returns.

?We have the luxury of not having to invest? and we can pick our spots,? Mr. Wiseman said in an interview Friday after the CPP Fund reported third-quarter financial results.

?Presently in both debt capital markets and in real estate, we?re seeing a lot of competition for assets? and we?re being very cautious.?

The situation is particularly acute in real estate, where there is limited supply of the well-situated, top-tier retail and office properties generally sought by CPPIB.

By way of example, Mr. Wiseman pointed to the record $1.27-billion paid by two real estate investment trusts in March for the downtown Toronto headquarters of the Bank of Nova Scotia.

He said he expects CPPIB?s private equity teams to be busier over the next little while, noting the appetite for leverage that was demonstrated in the recent US$24.4-billion privatization of computer maker Dell. CPPIB, which?invests the funds not needed by the Canada Pension Plan to pay current benefits,?was not involved with that deal.

In the first nine months of the fiscal year, which ends in March, the CPP Fund increased by $11-billion to $172.6 billion. This includes $9-billion in investment income before operating expenses, representing a gross investment return of 5.5%, and $2.4-billion in net CPP contributions.

EA And Zynga's Legal Battle Ends With A - Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By Nathan Grayson on February 15th, 2013 at 10:05 pm.

Lawsuits are nasty business. Accusations fly like hot lead, and all that?s left afterwards are the coldest of feelings. Oh, and sometimes millions of dollars in legal fees. Those too. I suppose, however, that it helps slightly when both parties involved are regularly accused of being soulless behemoths bereft of all feelings except slobber-soaked money lust. So it was when EA and Zynga came to verbal blows over The Ville?s more-than-passing resemblance to The Sims Social, and oh my, did things ever get heated. EA claimed to be ?taking a stand? against Zynga?s allegedly frequent copycatting, and the now-deflating social zeppelin fired back with barbs like this one: ?The truth is that despite years of trying to compete, and spending more than?a billion dollars on acquisitions, EA has not been able to successfully compete in the social gaming space and was losing talent, particularly to social gaming?leader Zynga.?

Now, however, it?s all over. And the fireworks? They are sadly few.

A court filing by the?US District Court of Northern California (via All Things Digital) tells the tale, though there?s really very little tale to tell. Seriously. Here?s the whole thing:

?EA and Zynga have resolved their respective claims and have reached a settlement of their litigation in the Northern District of California.?

Which tells us very little, other than the fact that EA and Zynga won?t be taking their war of words to court. If, however, you read between the lines, it?s not hard to surmise that a little (or a whole, whole lot) of money probably changed hands. I doubt, after all, that accusations of blatant theft were easily written off as a simple misunderstanding.

It is a bit strange to consider this whole thing in hindsight, though. A year ago, this would have been positively monumental news. Now it?s just kind of? there. Zynga?s bleeding cash and key employees, and its suspiciously sticky fingers have taken a backseat to, well? hm. You know that moment just before a freshly chopped tree splinters and tips over? That.

I?ve reached out to both EA and Zynga for more info, but ? as is typically the case with these things ? I doubt we?ll find out much more in the foreseeable future.

German appointed to head scandal-hit Vatican bank

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican appointed a German lawyer to head its bank on Friday, but the bid to turn the fortunes of the scandal-hit institution was clouded by his business links to a military shipbuilder.

The appointment, made by a commission of cardinals, was approved by Pope Benedict and is likely one of his last major decisions before he resigns at the end of the month, a move he announced on Monday, stunning Catholics around the world.

As chairman of the Institute for Works of Religion (IOR), Ernst von Freyberg will head efforts to improve the image of the Vatican's bank which is under investigation for money laundering and has been without a head for nine months.

But within minutes of announcing his appointment, the Vatican faced a new public relations challenge when asked to explain Freyberg's chairmanship of Blohm + Voss, a Hamburg-based shipbuilder in which he is a minority shareholder.

Reporters asked Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi how the Church could justify hiring someone who worked for a company with a long history of making warships, including for Nazi Germany.

After initially announcing that the company was no longer involved in that business, the Vatican later issued a statement saying that, while Blohm + Voss's main activity was ship repair and luxury yacht making, it was also "part of a consortium that is building four frigates for the German navy".

British buyout firm STAR Capital which bought Blohm + Voss in 2011 from ThyssenKrupp said at the time it was acquiring the non-military parts of the industrial conglomerate's ship business.

Lombardi said the fact that Freyberg organized pilgrimages to the shrine at Lourdes and was a Knight of Malta - an elite member of a charitable organization with roots in the Crusades - was proof he had the "considerable human and Christian sensibility" needed for his new role.

In a further clarification, the Vatican said that when Blohm + Voss's work on the four warships is complete, the company "will be 100 percent non-military".

OUSTED

Freyberg takes a position that has been vacant since May when the bank's board ousted the then head Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, accusing the Italian of neglecting his basic management responsibilities.

Gotti Tedeschi's unusually abrupt dismissal, along with the arrest of the pope's butler for stealing confidential papal documents, was the culmination of a leaks scandal that shook the Vatican and weighed on Benedict's papacy.

The Vatican has been trying to shed its image as a suspect financial center since 1982, when Roberto Calvi, an Italian known as "God's Banker" because of his links to the Vatican, was found hanging from London's Blackfriars Bridge.

In July, a European anti-money laundering committee said the Vatican bank failed to meet all its standards on fighting money laundering, tax evasion and other financial crimes.

The report by Moneyval, a monitoring committee of the 47-nation Council of Europe, found the Vatican passed nine of 16 "key and core" aspects of its financial dealings.

The report said IOR was making changes to meet the other requirements but found major failings in the running of the bank.

In 2010, Rome magistrates froze 23 million euros ($33 million) that IOR held in an Italian bank. The Vatican said at the time that its bank was merely transferring its own funds between its own accounts in Italy and Germany. The money was released in June 2011 but the investigation is continuing.

"There is a desire to fight all the way against all aspects of illegality and criminality that have insinuated themselves into the world of the economy," Lombardi said of the appointment.

Freyberg, born in 1958, will relinquish other roles, including on the board of temporary employment agency Manpower GmbH , to work five days a week for IOR, the Vatican said. Lombardi had previously said he would work only three days a week at IOR.

Carl Anderson, American head of the worldwide Knights of Columbus charity group and board member of the IOR said Freyberg would "contribute significantly to the IOR's ongoing work of modernization and transparency".

Canada's Effort to Unify Accounting Bodies Seeing Mixed Results

By Frank Byrt

Canada's professional accountants' effort to unite its disparate certification bodies under a new national accounting body, the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), is seeing mixed results.?

?

CPA Canada was officially established January 1 with the aim of unifying the accounting profession for Canada, which would include the issuance of the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.?

?

On its website, CPA Canada says its vision for the professional designation is: "To be the pre-eminent, internationally recognized Canadian accounting designation and business credential that best protects and serves the public interest."

?

CPA Canada, which has been in the project stage for several years, says "a single voice representing as many as 170,000 Canadian members would more effectively represent member interests with respect to domestic policy, legislation, and regulatory issues affecting the accounting profession."

?

"By drawing on the best of existing programs, we will create the certification program needed to produce Canada's pre-eminent professional accountants. The new program will:

  • Be ??and be recognized ??as at least as rigorous as all current programs.
  • Require an undergraduate degree and specific subject area coverage for admission to the professional education program.
  • Include a graduate-level professional education program developed nationally and delivered regionally.
  • Culminate in a comprehensive multi-day common final evaluation.
  • Include a part time, accelerated bridging program to appeal to the broadest possible group of potential candidates.
  • Appeal to employers for its development of accountancy and business skills in a high quality, cost effective professional program.
  • Meet or exceed the requirements of the leading global accounting bodies, ensuring the new profession can maintain existing, and establish, new Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs)."

?

?

Currently, Canada has over forty independent accounting bodies across its ten provinces and three territories.

?

A sixteen-member board of directors has been established for CPA Canada and includes regional representatives as well as representation from the accounting organizations participating in the unification.

?

  • Academic prerequisites for admission to the CPA professional education program.?
  • A graduate level CPA professional education program.?
  • Evaluations, including a common comprehensive final evaluation.?
  • Relevant practical experience."

The CPA Canada board has appointed Kevin Dancey, FCPA, FCA, as president and CEO of CPA Canada. He and Joy Thomas, FCMA, who assumes the role of executive vice president, will lead the new national organization.?

?

Dancey told AccountingWEB that the CPA designation awarded in Canada will be "substantially equivalent" to that of a certified public accountant, or CPA, in the United States.

?

But there is discord in the unification process, as only two of the three national accounting bodies ??Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) and Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada) ??are supporting CPA Canada. The third national accounting organization, Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada), dropped out of the unification discussions after initially taking part in the process.?

?

CGA-Canada President and CEO Anthony Ariganello told AccountingWEB, "CGA-Canada has always believed that there is value in unification, but we need to ensure fairness and equity for CGAs. At this time, we feel that there are a number of issues not being addressed in discussions, such as the varying use of legacy designations, the commitment to minority protection, and the governance structure of the new body."

?

In addition, acceptance of CPA Canada is complicated by the fact that a change in professional designation is a matter of provincial jurisdiction under the Canadian Constitution, so the decision is up to each province's CICA, CMA Canada, and CGA-Canada membership to individually decide the matter.?

?

At its inaugural meeting on January 15, CPA Canada approved the applications of CPA Quebec and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) to become Organization Members of CPA Canada. That brought CPA Canada individual members to more than 70,000, according to a January 23 posting on CPA Canada's website.

?

Indicative of the confusion that has enveloped the process, CPA Quebec's membership includes CGA members from its province as well as CICA and CMA members.?

?

Several other provincial CGA organizations are still discussing joining, according to CPA Canada. For example, "on January 14, the Certified General Accountants Association of New Brunswick (CGANB) issued an announcement to its members stating that the CGANB Board of Governors has chosen to re-enter discussions with the New Brunswick Institute of Chartered Accountants (NBICA) and CMA New Brunswick (CMANB) to support the unification of the accounting profession currently taking place across Canada."?

?

But CGA Ontario, which is in the nation's most populated province, said in a January 30 statement posted on its website that its board of directors doesn't support joining CPA Canada: "Over the last few weeks, more than 500 CGAs participated in member forums. When CGAs heard the facts, they overwhelmingly rejected the idea of merging with a body that would not commit to treating all members fairly and equally."
