Connolly: Issa is the real bully (Politico)

NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko isn?t the top bully in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing room on Wednesday, Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) says.

Connolly says committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) is the real schoolyard menace.

?Ironic that #OGR Chairman is accusing #NRC Chairman of a bullying managerial style,? Connolly posted on his official Twitter feed during a committee hearing with all five NRC commissioners.

?#OGR chair could teach #NRC chair about bullying: denial of minority witnesses & travel, censorship, forced posting of biased signage,? he tweeted a few minutes later.

Issa came under fire from Democrats for imposing a new rule declaring Obama administration officials as minority witnesses ? meaning Democrats often would not be able to designate their own witness.

?This new policy is unprecedented and undermines the integrity of our committee by impairing the ability of minority members to bring balance and perspective to the committee?s proceedings,? committee Democrats, led by ranking member Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, wrote to Issa in June.

Issa also upset Democrats after denying travel expenses for a drug control forum in Chicago organized by Rep. Danny Davis of Illinois.

His denial of funds was ?a result of the committee minority?s failure to fully address my concerns that the Chicago forum was not official committee business and therefore it was inappropriate to authorize the use of official committee funds in support of the event,? Issa wrote to Democrats, as reported by Roll Call.

An Issa spokesman dismissed Connolly?s charges.

?Congressman Connolly?s flippant dismissal of sworn testimony from a Democratic commissioner that Chairman Jaczko has repeatedly intimidated female staff, even bringing them to tears in front of colleagues, is deeply disappointing,? committee spokesman Frederick Hill told POLITICO in an email.
