Professionals from across the construction industry learnt lessons about how to avoid making disastrous mistakes during a breakfast event organised by accountancy firm Chantrey Vellacott DFK.
The event was held at the firm?s offices on Calthorpe Road in Birmingham in partnership with Systech International as part of a series of seminars for businesses in the construction sector.
Richard Morris, head of expert services at Systech International, which advises organisations on many of the world?s major projects, examined the recent Walter Lilly v Mackay court case which was described by the judge as a ?disaster waiting to happen?.
The case provided guidance on the preparation of claims and the management of disputes as well as how, and how not to, manage a project.
Richard said: ?Whilst the headlines about the case focused on the colourful language used by the protagonists, the judgment serves as a useful summary of the do?s and don?ts for the management of a project as well as a great advert for the services that Systech International offer.
?It was excellent to see a diverse range of attendees at the event and we look forward to working with Chantrey Vellacott DFK next year on our joint seminar programme.?
Paul Fenner, partner at Chantrey Vellacott DFK in Birmingham and heads up the national property and construction team at the firm, said it was the first of a series of joint events to be held over the coming months.
?Our property and construction group works with a large number of organisations in the sector to offer a range of advisory services,? said Paul.
?We understand the key issues facing companies in the sector and that construction projects involve high risks, as the Walter Lilly v Mackay case clearly demonstrates.
?We were delighted to partner with Richard Morris and Systech to provide a forum to look at topical challenges facing the construction sector and it was extremely useful for everyone to look at the case findings and learn lessons from the failings. We look forward to our next event early in the new year.?
