Capitalizing on Wave Energy in Hawaii

?

Wave energy is almost unique to Hawaii in the fact that the islands experience more water-based energy through waves than any other state. Surrounded on four sides by water, the potential to harness wave energy as a means of generating eco-friendly, green energy is nearly limitless!

?

Let?s take a look at how to capitalize on Hawaii wave energy:

?

Oceanlinx Ltd.: Oceanlinx was one of the first companies to take an interest in the power of Hawaii wave energy and al that it can be used for. In February 2008, the company announced plans to provide Maui Energy Company with 2.7 megawatts of wave energy that would be channeled from two offshore floating platforms.

These platforms work by utilizing water oscillation as a source of kinetic energy, which can then be transferred to usable electricity.

?

Oahu Wave Energy: The waves near Oahu are some of the strongest in the world when measured by their pressure per square inch. This makes the island an optimal place to harness wave energy into power that can be provided to residents of the island. The plan for Oahu is to employ a 40-kW experimental buoy, manufactured by Ocean Power Technologies, to use the natural motion in waves to drive an electrical generator contained within the buoy.

?

These two main projects are just the beginning when it comes to making use of an abundant natural resource to generate clean energy.

Hawaii is extremely adept at using its strong waves to generate electricity for its inhabitants because they are making use of naturally occurring energy.

?

This is how it works:

?

  1. Waves move all the time, carrying kinetic energy with them. This kinetic energy is energy in the form of motion, similar to the energy that occurs when we run on a treadmill.
  2. Buoys in the ocean that are moved by the waves contain generators. Because they?re being moved by the kinetic energy of the waves, the generators are also receiving energy.
  3. Because energy cannot be created nor destroyed, the kinetic energy from the waves it transferred to the generators, which we then use to as electrical energy.

?

By simply using energy that already exists, we?re able to create residential electricity without creating waste as well! Hawaii wave power is an abundant energy source because it?s always flowing and always moving! We simply take that energy and use it as we need it to become more eco-friendly residents.
