Negative Effects of a Dominant Negative Attitude
If he gets that promotion over me, I will never work hard again! If she doesn?t take the bills more seriously we?ll be poor forever! I never win. I can?t even compete! I?m sure you have heard people around you use these phrases, or something like them. Maybe you have been guilt of using them once or twice yourself, who knows? Just kidding of course. We all get negative at times and maybe get a little carried away. However, when does having a negative attitude more often than not start to negatively impact us the most? Well, if we have a negative reflection of events, more often than not, how will that also affect our chances of being happy? If we take the law of cause and effect, it will answer these questions rather quickly. Say you are consistently responding negatively to something, for example, you hear your alarm clock in the morning, your lips tighten -?you stretch and say? oh man, I don?t want to go to work?ugh. Say you do this everyday. How will your morning usually go? Well, I know I used to do this and?I usually took my time, didn?t cheer up unless I ate something and was late to work on a consistent basis.
What was the?reason for this? Why such a?negative attitude? Well, French aristocrat, writer and poet Antoine de Saint-Exupery once said, ?The meaning of things lies not in the things themselves, but in our attitude towards them.? It wasn?t my alarm clocks fault, although I did hate that horrible noise. It wasn?t my jobs fault, although my boss was a pain in the neck.?Maybe?it was my boss though! Well, lets see.
Maybe it was my?attitude towards him. I would finally get to work and constantly blame my boss about my circumstances. I was overworked and not appreciated because of him. Well was this really true, or was?it the meaning I had placed on him and everything else. I did not like to get up and go to work because I believed that?I could not control what was going on. I finally found out, that I?was the one who?controlled whether my attitude?was negative towards anything.
Choosing a Positive Attitude Makes Things Work Out
So what happened? Well, I did get rid of that alarm clock and I am no longer late to work too.?More importantly I changed jobs. I finally realized that my negative attitude towards my situation was not going to help me make it better. In fact, the minute I started to change my attitude, that I can control my life, I began to change my life. Oprah said it well. She said, the greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.? She is 100% right! When I changed my attitude from blame and helplessness to one of responsibility and control, it empowered me to start thinking of a way to change for the better. A negative attitude got me nothing but stress at home and at work. I had enough of it and finally got my attitude right. I never looked back!
Final Thoughts on Attitude
So as you can see, when we change our attitude, we change our life. It?s like a balance. Add more weight to the positive side and you move closer to positive results. I don?t think you want to add any more weight to the other side of the scale? Finally, I love this quote by congresswoman?Carolyn Warner. She said, ?I am convinced that attitude is the key to success or failure in almost any of life?s endeavors. Your attitude-your perspective, your outlook, how you feel about yourself, how you feel about other people-determines your priorities, your actions, your values. Your attitude determines how you interact with other people and how you interact with yourself.?
It is true that a positive attitude will do much more good for us than a negative one!
